Is my substrate contaminated? With what?
    #28576031 - 12/09/23 04:08 PM (1 month, 19 days ago)

Hi everyone! I'm new to this. I have some yellow oyster mycelium in straw, stored in my refrigerator over winter. It has been in my refrigerator for roughly 2 months.

There is a dark spot that has been there for at least 3 months but it has not changed size or colour during that time.

I noticed yesterday that the mycelium is growing around it. Hard to say if it has always been like that since the mycelium was still very weak when I checked last time (see pictures). I assume it's contaminated but I find it odd that the spot hasn't changed. Could anyone please help verify it or identify what kind of contamination this is?

First picture is what it looks like now, second photo is from 2 months ago, third photo is from 3 months ago.

Any ideas what this is?

Looks weird but I'm not sure it's a contam. Maybe something leeched out of the straw. What's your plan with the mycelium? Try inoculating some more straw maybe?

Thank you for responding  . I traced the edge of the 'gap' so I can monitor it in case anything changes.

Essentially, I had a tiny amount of left-over mycelium that I wanted to see if I could grow/store for next year.

I thought - without doing much research - that storing it in my refrigerator would slow the growth down but that didn't happen (quite the opposite), so my initial plan was to just leave it there till spring. I only have this one jar.

Since it grew a lot quicker than expected, I've thought about splitting it up and move it to two larger glass jars with some more substrate. I just haven't dared to do it yet since I don't know the current state of this one, and I've been worried about accidentally contaminating it.

Well it's fully colonized so pending that weird spot it's probably safe to inoculate something else with it. You can inoculate a couple more jars of straw or whatever and keep them in the fridge while they colonize. The fridge temps will favor oysters over most contaminants and slow growth to help make it to spring.
