Lactarius Rubidus (Candy Cap) on Agar
    #28575411 - 12/09/23 07:45 AM (1 month, 18 days ago)

Hi all,

I recently found a few specimens of Lactarius Rubidus (Candy Cap) fruiting directly off of decaying wood and wanted to try my hand at cloning them. I had 7 different specimens I cloned, and only one of them took to the agar. The one that took seemed to grow pretty fast, so I wanted to see if anybody here is familiar with this mycelium.

Attached are photos of the first plate, as well as the second plate. Would appreciate if anybody can confirm this is LR mycelium and not some sort of contam.

Thanks in advance!

I also discovered in the tackle box I had left some of the candy caps, that they disintegrated and look to have left behind mycelium, or maybe it’s some kind of mold? Any thoughts? Looks to be similar to what’s on the plate.

Thanks for the responses!

Yes, my understanding is that it’s believed most Candy Cap species are mycorrhizal, but there doesn’t seem to be very much information.

I found this excerpt on Wikipedia, “ However, unusually for a mycorrhizal species, L. rubidus is also commonly observed growing directly on decaying conifer wood.[6] All candy cap species seem to be associated with a range of tree species.“

These few that I cloned were all found on decaying wood, so I figured it’d make for a fun experiment. We’ll see if anything comes of it.

Took some transfers after the plate grew out a bit further. Few photos for reference…

Thank you sir!

So the transfers I made are all looking clean, albeit growing slowly.

Also, there seems to be two types of mycelium growth happening. If you look at the first pic I took the transfer from, you can see the darker less fluffy area, as well as the white fluffy area. On the transfers they all grow both types, although one type was more prominent depending on where I took the transfer from. Here are some pics:

Any thoughts as to what the growth with dark area is? I cut a piece of it out today to really examine it, and upon further inspection, the dark area looks to be a bunch of dark root like objects. Could this be Ectomycorrhizae maybe? Maybe some sort of soil bacterium growing alongside? I took some photos with a magnifying glass below:

I also made up 6 sterile grain jars and put some agar wedges from the 1st transfer plate in them. Next step is to make some liquid culture from the newest set of plates.

Merry Christmas all!

I found some Candy Caps in another area a few weeks back, and tried cloning a few on Agar. I think they may have been Lactarius Rufulus, but I wasn't able to get any of them to take. It makes me wonder if what I have growing on the agar is actually Candy Cap, especially since only one of the original 7 I cloned grew anything.

Since my last post I put some of it to grains, and it's been growing really slow. It doesn't look like normal myc, and I wonder if there's something else growing alongside it, or if it's something else entirely.

Below are some updated pics of the plates after a few weeks of growth as well as what the grains are looking like. If you look at the plates it looks like there are two different types of myc growing. Any thoughts on this?

The grain jars that I took transfers off the second plate definitely have a rank smell, so I’m pretty sure the area that’s been off colored on all the plates is some kind of mold.

I scrapped the very top of the white myc to try and isolate it and this was the result. None of the black dots anymore, but still something in the middle underside. Took some more small scraps off this today in attempt to clean it up even further. I’m wondering if even this white myc could be some kind of mold/bacteria itself?
