Oyster or Angel Wings?
    #28570123 - 12/05/23 03:57 PM (1 month, 22 days ago)

Greetings. I've come across a cluster in the woods which initially, I thought was Lung Oyster (Pleurotus pulmonarius), but after doing more research, am discovering that it could very well be Angel Wings (Pleurocybella porrigens). Not sure how to ID, but I found that the latter tends to grow on conifer. I'm kind of retarded so I already cleaned, cooked, and ate some. I'm not dead, sick, or tripping balls yet.

Even if they are Angel Wings, should I really be concerned about eating them? Read about a bunch of Japs dying after eating angels while people in North America eat them without issue.

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.
Old rotting tree (unknown type) in Nor Cal

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.
Very white, attached, and decurrent gills

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.
On one of the bigger ones: about an inch long, same white color, hard yet squishy

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
On one of the bigger ones:

Spore print color:
Very important!
Haven't done one yet

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
None found

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

I can't tell for sure if these are Angel wings or oysters. They seem thin but they  have a little stalk, which angel wings usually don'thave. Wait for a TI to confirm.

From what I read, Angel wings used to be considered an edible species until some cases of poisoning occurred in Japan. All cases were in elderly people with kidney problems. Some were even in dialysis. They all suffered encelopathy and all had consumed angel wings. You may want to watch this video.

Pleurotus I think. You should also be able to tell by the smell.

And it appears to be a deciduous forest as well.

Whether P. pulmonarius or P. ostreatus is often hard to tell from pictures alone.

Looks like Pleurotus to me as well.
Very pretty specimens too!

Angel wings (Pleurocybella porrigens) don't have any stem, so I'd say those are Pleurotus, they seem to have a clear stem

Oh - and if I am recalling correctly the incident with the angel wings killing some people in Japan - they were all older folks who all already had chronic kidney conditions.. So it seems like there's probably something to them being toxic, but maybe only dangerous to someone who's vulnerable?? but is it a chance you are willing to take.. (they are common out here, no I've never eaten any)

Indeed, a pretty batch. The same day I came across the oysters I also found Lion's Mane. Had a great feast
