Help identify Xerocomus species
    #28572770 - 12/07/23 12:19 PM (1 month, 20 days ago)

Found several patches of these colourful boletes in a mixed forest near oaks, in northern Israel. I identified them to Xerocomus genus, but have trouble finding info on the internet to identify to species.

Found in clusters, pairs and sometimes growing gregariously.

Caps are around 3-10 cm. Little ones are pale tan, smooth and round. Older mushrooms have cracked, reddish, uneven caps. Flesh is pale yellow and doesn't change in color even hours after damaged.

Pores are relatively big. Their color goes from pale yellow to olive green or brown, slightly darkens when damaged but doesn't stain blue. Attachment is decurrent.

Stem is fibrous, bright yellow under the cap, usually pale at the base, in-between often red, but some are orange or tan.

They have a very strong smell, in fact they stink like dried fish seasoned with earth.
