That’s a good question. A bit early to tell. They’re originally from a cross that Faht was/is working on — Maketi. Still very unstable though so might show a lot of different phenotypes.
They’re as unstable as unstable gets yours is the f2 which is the gen that you see the most variation in phenos. The whole range of all mak and all yeti and everything in between those two. But in order to see those phenos, you need to do heavy ms grows. If you’re only transferring a tiny piece of myc off a germ plate, chances are you’re only gonna see one or two phenos.
Looks like you have yeti stature with a splash of the pigmented mak with that grow.
If you use germ plates and want to see a ton of phenos, you either need to take every part of the plate that looks clean and transfer/grow those out (probably the longest, most labor intensive route) or take a risk and put all parts of the germ plate that look clean into a single quart and either grow that out or g2g that to a handful of more qts. And that’s only one gen lol.
The key to faster stabilizing (ime) is small grows with heavy ms. I prefer making spore solution either with Turning swab sets into spore solution or making Jar prints. One of the best tools I’ve found for pheno hunting and stabilizing is pf cakes. Each cake gets 4 inoculation points that don’t move and have the potential for multiple pheno expression and they’re fairly resistant to bacteria simply because you don’t shake them.
For example, here’s the f2 of another maketi f1 clone where I made a swab set into SS… I shot up multiple 4oz jars of grain and the best looking one I used to make GLC that went into qts. Swabs to 4oz..

To two qts..

To a 16qt tub

Notice all the phenos I have to choose from to then swab and clone to take to the next gen.
Those 4oz grains above that I harvested the myc from for glc are allowed to recover and then spawn to a sandwich bag grow.. unless they’re too iffy, then they get immediately spawned to slightly dry CV because they’re wet from the GLC and if they appear baccy at all, there’s a chance they won’t recover because they bacteria had a field day in the overly wet grains

So even if the qts don’t pan out, I still have colonized grains that I can grow and see/swab/clone the phenos available. If I have a colonized 4oz ms jar of a gen, I will be able to see that gens phenos because I kept the grow small. I might not get a tub out of it but I will get a sandwich bag
That maketi f1 that was the donor for your f2 came from a ms sandwich bag (the white m’er f’er)…

Which I then cloned and grew out on another sandwich bag..

And here it is in a mono (pic by HBO)

Another example of FP+ (PE x AA+) heavy ms f2 done with the same process as above with even more phenos to pick from..

And with stabilizing a pheno with as little work as possible, you want to find that same pheno in each subsequent gen. Doing that without using heavy ms could take you forever and a day to find that same pheno in even the next gen
Anyway, pf cakes are the shit for pheno hunting/stabilizing. You make 4 cakes and have the possibility of seeing 10-16+ phenos. Here’s 3 on a single f2 ms maketi cake

Ik it’s potd.. technically there’s pics lol

Hey faht, since you don't use agar, you clone straight to grain? Also how do you like to germinate swabs?

Yeah I clone straight to grain using This method . Works great for me because the 4oz jars are so ingrained in my work flow because I either use the jar to make GLC or I dry them out for storage. For me, agar would just be another step. But I don’t know any better/anything different so I’m blissfully unaware and this is just how I’ve always done it. I’ll never not recommend someone get into agar because ik it’s a great tool. When I first started out, all I made were cakes.. like I’d make 96 cakes at a time and double stack em in monos.. I was blissfully unaware then too. It’s not until I started doing grains that I realized how much of a time saver doing grains was. I’m sure when I finally get an ffu and start using agar, it’ll be the same feeling.
For swabs I make em into SS but if they’re my swabs, I’ll also dip em in sterile water to rinse/wet them and then rub the two together and literally dunk them into a 4oz grain jar. Rubbing them together loosens and dislodges the spores so they easily get transferred to the grains.
I say my swabs because I make sure when I make them I do everything possible to get the cleanest spores I can… the main method for that is only swabbing gills that are still covered by a veil. I remove the veil with a clean swab and then use another set to swab the gills. If I’m making swabs to share with everyone, I won’t do that because it’s too laborious… in that case I just hope whoever I’m sending them to does agar haha.
I always have a back up plan tho.. I make multiple swabs from different fruits in case one doesn’t work. Luckily for me, the first one usually does. I haven’t had to use it yet but brf pucks with a josex poke to grains is always an option.

Why wait till you get an ffu? Agar is fun and easy!
I do like the simplicity of your ways tho

Hey fahtster, have you tried shredding PF cakes to coir for pheno hunting? It seems like that would be one of the easiest ways.
I'm also confused why you said fruiting pf cakes (as cakes) is bad for pheno hunting, because of all the phenos you get I guess. I must be missing something.

Shredding cakes is one more step to add to weakening the myc network and if your cakes are baccy to begin with just more risk. But it’s not the worst idea just not what I prefer to do.
I said cakes are the shit, not, shit haha
