Earthen Eating
    #28565195 - 12/02/23 12:16 PM (1 month, 25 days ago)

Shat can I eat that has leftover biodegradable remains that I can compost?
A list of examples: banana peels, strawberry leaves, edamame pods, apple cores, pistachio shells, watermelon outsides, orange peels, coffee grains! What else should I eat seasonally other than blueberries?

We chuck just about everything out on the compost heap. Peels, skins and shells of whatever fruit and nuts we eat, vegetable cutoffs, dinner leftovers (rare; virtually all of it gets eaten), old/stale bread, dilapidated houseplant leaves/stalks or entire plants when they somehow expire, potting soil, cuttings and weeds from the garden including twigs and branches (no major chunks of wood as they take too long to compost), flower bouquets when they go bad, etc. etc. etc.

We don't eat meat, so no meat leftovers etc.

There's no smell. 95% of what we dump out there is composted within a year. The compost goes back into the yard. This year we had several tomato and avocado plants sprouting from our compost, and an orange or lemon tree here and there as well.

It's a small pile but since it composts so efficiently, it doesn't really grow in size even though we chuck junk on it on a daily basis. In summer it sometimes starts to pile up with material from the garden, but within a few weeks it tends to sag in on itself and in winter it's just a small mound about 1-2ft deep and a couple of ft across.

Long story short, don't overthink it. If it's plant-based, just chuck it on the heap and it'll be OK. Some things take a little longer to compost than others. Woods tend to take a few years, so go easy on those if you don't want your pile to grow too much. Make sure the pile is in a shaded spot and keep moist during dry summers. Mix it a couple of times a year so it's nice and homogenous. Try not to smother it with lawn cuttings during summers, although it'll survive even that if it only happens occasionally.

Should compost be exposed to SunLight?

If seeds sprout it means the pile didn't get hot enough. Although those are favorable plants to have sprout, if throwing in weeds they will likely sprout as well.

Yes, the weeds also sprout. This pile indeed does not ferment at high temperature. Can't be bothered to 'fix' it though!

Should I keep the compost under the lid or open for FAE?

Open is better AFAIK.
You don't want anaerobic fermentation, which is really really gross.

I saw a photo of a newt with his fruits. I think camouflage ability of chameleons is fungal-affective, a hidden power. Hydrostatic introduction with a fish pump bubbler and a rack to rest the cakes in an FC.

How will azomite affect my compost? It being volcanic ash?

I'm afraid you lost me.

Our compost pile is just that. It's a pile we chuck stuff onto. It manages itself. That's what I feel is the essence of a compost pile. Chuck & forget.

I am planning on adding perlite to my compost to give it space. Have you used Azomite?

Same.  We have a big bin, it does have a lid and is sealed well enough in attempts to keep larger rodents out, but still allows plenty of airflow.  We do nothing but hurl the green/food waste in there and hardly ever mix it up.  There are little doors on the bottom of the bin we open to harvest the compost and it's always right proper.
