Question about supplemented subs and their containers, starting reishi.

Hey guys, I’ve been posting here a little bit and reading over the forums. I have a question about supplemented sub for Reishi. Basically I want to k ow if I can run supplemented subs (wheat bran, alfalfa pellets) in non-autoclavable containers. What I mean is I know supplemented subs need to be sterilized. I have heard that sometimes when you use wheat bran you can get away with basic “pasteurization” aka boiling water poured over. I want to run reishi in 2-gal ziplocks, 9-gal trash liners and 1-gal milk jugs. How do I use one of these containers with nutritive/supplemented sub? Do I just not supplement it and run regular wood chips/hwfp (hydrated to fc sawdust) for the non-pp co gainers etc? (The ones that won’t stand up to the heat of a pc @250°F for hours and hours. Thanks in advance and thanks a lot. New to this and trying to get some of the basic questions out of the way. Couldn’t find an exact answer to this particular question, that’s why I’m posting.

I forgot to mention i am sterilizing supplemented unicorn bags @15psi for 2hrs. I plan to inoculate each one with about 1/4 mycoqt of spawn. They are about 4-6 handfuls of sub mixture each.

I am not sure if that will work, just spitballing Ideas here...
But how about this: The sub in the bag is sterilized in the PC, afterwards take it to your SAB and inoculate it with your grain. Then once fully colonized, break it up and spawn it to your container?
Ofc, if you had a LFH it would make this work easier.
I personally, would just grow them in the unicorn bags, I did the same ^^

Growing reishi in the bags is the easiest method.
My instincts want to say that inoculating sterilized sub in a non sterile container Is a recipe for contam.
Non supplemented substrate with a high spawn rate will give good results in a tub.

Agree it's risky. I inoculated the sterilized unicornbags in my SAB, but I didn't really feel save that way ^^

So just pasteurized sawdust and grainspawn like 1:1 or 1:2?

Yeah sawdust is fine, you can use wood chips if you want. 20% grain spawn is plenty enough to be considered supplementation.
You can do lipas fuel pellet tek or hold the sub at 140-160°f for 60 minutes.

Thanks for the replies guys. So I’ve been doing some reading and yeah I’m just gonna use bags. I’ll either spawn directly into 6qt plastic bins inside a ez dial or just spawn in the bag. For some of the supplemented ones I will wait until those get fully colonized and spawn into 2gal zips or monotubs with sawdust/coir/shavings.

800g rye + 1,5kg hardwood pellets + 45g CaSO4 + 15g CaCO3 + 2,25L water in 32L monotub EZ dial give me that :

Sorry but what are those chemical names? Pardon my ignorance but I’m not familiar yet.

CaSO4 = Calcium sulfate / Gypsum
CaCO3 = Calcium carbonate / Lime

Is there a clear upside to growing on sawdust/subed blocks outside of maybe growing horns vs shelves?
Once I discovered growing reishi in buckets with cardboard I never returned to bags.

That sounds cool, do you have any threads or pics related to your cb grows?

I followed widernessjunkie's guide and it works like a charm.

I no longer have a grow tent so I put my entire inoculated bucket into a trash bag to colonized and fruit. Sorry, no pics of that.

I know this is off topic but what do you guys think I should use for oyster sub? Sawdust wood chips and straw or cardboard (w wheat bran or alfalfa pellets) or sunsupplemented?

If you can sterilize then you can supplement. All those options are good substrates. The easiest is fuel pellets imo. Go with what you have available
