screening your horse poop
    #2856274 - 07/04/04 02:14 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

WHat methods do you use to get all the worms, insects and other unwanted stuff out of your horse shit?

My friend has her (mostly) dry shit outside in two 69L rubbermaid tubs. After a day of rain she went to see what the prognosis was on the poop and when she opened the lids all of the wormies had come to the top. She just grabbed them by the handful and threw them into her garden.

I just thought of another question:

Do worms damage outdoor patches?

You know, not sure about worms but watch out for slugs and snails they love to eat shrooms.

At first i was afraid of all the worms and creepy creatures but ive been geting shrooms anyways. I cut back on watering a bit and it helps reduce worms but a few is ok

I appreciate all the replies about the outdoor question but what i really want answered is:

When you've got your horse shit all harvested and you're almost ready to spawn with the grain, what do you do about all the other unwanted stuff mixed in with the turds?

I just read in another thread that pasteurizing/sterilizing while leaving insects, worms, etc in is a bad idea because when they start to rot they will be a contam magnet. Do you even bother to try and get them out?

Yes, I got them out but the horse crap I had wasn't that bad. Does make sence though, I would think leaving them is a garentee for contams.

You should sift the dried shit if it?s not clean enough.

Theres no reason to pasturize substrate going outdoors unless your making an isolated bed or container. Pick most of em out if its being pasturized but they dont make conatms, ive yet to have manure or my straw compost contam on me and im sure there were some worm in the mix.

Most of the manure my friend has will be used for an indoor bulk, so she'll need to pasteurize or sterilize.

That is a gorgeous patch my man.

My friend noticed that when she dried some poop the worms had an exodus like you predicted.

She knows that pasteurization is the preferred method, but she feels it will be more work so she may just use the pc.

She plans on using Roadkills horse shit tek.

I'll tell her to take your advice. She will want to prepare a fair amount (~35L) at a time. Does it matter how deep you load up the container you plan on pasteurizing in? The heat should penetrate deep enough regardless of how much there is correct?

Whats the best way to break up all the turds (homogenize) if someone has a lot of shit?

It doesn't seem like doing it by hand would be very efficient.

I just buy bags of dehydrated manure and composted manure, its cheap and works well and no messy handling.

I just take mine and lay it out on a window screen and soak it really well with a water hose and then-yes-then I get to play in crap as I break up the clumps by hand!(gloves of course)Then I wait and do it again the next day.I do this depending on the freshness of the manure-if it is really fresh I do it maybe 4-5 times to leach it very well, but,if it is the old dry stuff then it will probably be fine the way it is although I leach it at least once anyway for safe measures.
Then I let this air dry in the sun for 3-4 days and then its ready to use. This was fresh manure(yes steaming)but prepared properly it will look like this VVVV
