Whoa whoa whoa south of LA???  That is a big deal because I don't think these are known to grow south of the Bay Area.

So they wouldn’t be wavy caps or is it just extremely rare.

They are most like p. cyan (wavy caps) with a tiny slim chance they are p. alleni with a phenotype variation that makes them so wavy.  Or maybe they are some cool new mutation between the two of them that allows them to grow around LA.

I've never heard of wavy caps in southern california so this is not just extremely rare but a huge deal.  You have a chance to spread those spores to similar environments around the area you found these and introduce the species to the area for everyone to enjoy.  This is an awesome oppurtunity.

Learn about micro-climates and stuff, figure out temperature of the area, etc. etc.  Find as similar areas nearby and help spread the spores dude.  In a couple of years, they could be in multiple spots in LA.

What I’ve started doing is pulling up clumps of mycelium attached to the stem when foraging—today i used a coffee cup to store the wood chips that were covered in mycelium.

Look for similar micro climates—even if they’re only a few feet away although it kinda makes more sense to go a little farther.

Look for damp wood chips close to the shaded roots of those spiky grasses, north facing slopes or adjacent to northern walls of buildings (out of direct sunlight as much as possible), irrigation if you can find it.

Then take a good chunk (at least half a cup if not more) of mycelium covered chips and “plant” it. Cover it with more wood chips then check back in a year or two or five—even if it’s not you, someone will be grateful that you helped spread the web!

I’m somewhat of a noob to spreading cultures but it seems like a pretty foolproof way that doesn’t involve any scientific gear or fancy teks.

I would also recommend replenishing the patch with Alder wood chips that you can buy in the barbecue section at the Home Depot.

Here’s another photo of a big clump of mycelium holding a clump of wood chips together that came up with some fresh fruits yesterday:
