Beefs Beefy Tub Tek 24

Spawning The Beefy Tub
So I guess I spawn a little differently and I thought Id make a quick tek for my method because I've had such great success with it. I've picked up a few little tricks and tools over the years to make the job a lot cleaner and easier as well. I like a thicc substrate. I find that thicker substrates yield much better and have a greater propensity to flush multiple times. I use Pasty's Ez Dial Monotubs. I really like these sterilite 16 quart tubs. As with my other teks, I've included a lot of visuals. Some things are just easier done than said. I realize there are many threads for spawning a tub but I still see so many poorly prepared subs. Why does it matter? Because inconsistently prepared substrates yield inconsistent results. Also, a lot spawning of teks are combo teks. This tek is meant to be a stripped down and highly visual guide that assumes you already know how to develop clean spawn and prepare coir to field capacity. If you don't, you can find this information in the hitchhikers guide linked in my signature. My ratio is technically 1:4, doubled. For brevity its easier to just say 2:8. Please don't lecture me on the mathematical syntax--Im aware of it. But then, I also pseudo-case my tubs with an additional 2 quarts, so maybe my ratio is 2:10? Who gives a shit? Its beefy. It works great. Lets get into it. Materials: A bucket of prepped coir. I only add dry verm if I fucked up my field capacity and added too much water. This will soak up additional water but verm is otherwise purposeless. Two quarts of clean spawn. A Mid sized tub with a gasket seal and snap-locks for mixing the ingredients. A rubber tile float. A clean quart jar for measuring. No, I don't use liners. Ill get to that. A pair of clean nitrile or latex gloves. Its not necessary in terms of sanitation, but I don't like getting coir under my fingernails. 1. Break up your spawn and dump it in the mixing tub. I personally bash it on my thigh but you can use a phone book or a tire or the corpse of your enemies. 2. Break up any remaining clump with your pink little mits. 3. Dump 8 quarts of coir (or Coir/verm) into the mixing tub. Heres what a quart of coir should look like. I don't pack it but I do fill it and shake it gently to settle. yyyep. Its a lot of coir. 4. Shake it just as you would a new born baby. 5. Pour the contents of the mixing tub into the monotub. 6. Now for the tile float. I use this to level and compress the substrate. I like this one as the length happens to be the exact width of the tub. Take your time. Do a good job. Don't pack with all your might, just be firm and pay special attention to the edges. I find that if I pack the edges well, I don't get sidepins at all and I don't need a liner. I see a lot of new growers skipping this step and go into their grow with a choppy looking loose substrate. This is a mistake. It will invariably cause inconsistencies in your surface conditions and make for a shitty pinset. Pits and low spots tend to pool water which causes myc-mat and matted myc just won't pin for shit, and besides, its ugly. 7. Pseudo casing time. This technique was deveoped by Stipe-n Cap and has many benefits I won't get into but you should read his tek and you should pseudocase all your grows. I add two more quarts of coir on top of the leveled and compressed substrate and spread it out as best I can with my hand. 8. Level and compress again with the tile float. Same as before. Make it pretty. Don't leave coir all stuck to the sides of the tub. Do it like you actually like yourself. Thats it. Your very own ez dial Beefy Tub. I don't use micropore. I just set it and forget it until its time to monitor surface conditions. If you're not familiar with that concept you need to read about it. I don't allow the walls or the lid to drip onto my sub. You can wipe the walls dry with a paper towel if that starts to happen or shake the lid dry. No, opening your tub won't contaminate it. The spawning process isn't even close to sanitary and that entire concept needs to go away like a bad dream. Voila. Pretty. Notice that the substrate on this one was prepared with verm and the top layer is straight coir. It wasn't deliberate but it does show the top-layer depth. Really wish I had taken a picture of this ghost tub before I started harvesting. I got excited.

You're trying to mess with my head, Beef. You start with the 16 quart tubs, and then you finish with 20 quart tubs.
My brain is fragile right now. 60 grams fresh of Nats tore my brain up.
Some notes -
- It might be good to fully link "Pasty's Ez Dial Monotubs" since you don't re-explain the hole setup. - I think it takes less effort to mix up sub/spawn with your hands than it does to pick up however many pounds of sub and shake it. Just saying. - I use gloves for prep too, but I don't like waste. I started using reusable rubber kitchen gloves for prep. It's an option that works.
Anyway, thanks for another great write-up.
EDIT - Added link

I really appreciated the side shot of the pseudocasing layer, 1 or 2 inches in words isn't something I could readily visualize.
Have you thought about brick laying? Your skills are pretty excellent

I'm now realizing that there is a 16 qt and a 20 qt that are almost identical. I think that's why I'm confused.
So you're definitely using the 16 qt? I have some of the 20 qt ones, but either way your tek should work fine.
