In September 2023, a 14-year-old boy died hours after taking the One Chip Challenge and Paqui immediately discontinued their product. That's why I can't find it on eBay anymore.

They weren't even that bad. I loved them, actually wished they made them by the bag. I was driving when I found them at a gas station, I took a picture and sent it to my wife, she called like omg make you sure have milk people have gone to the ER over that. I was like no babe it's ok I ate it already it was delicious I'm on my way home. She was like, wtf is wrong with you?
I've always loved extremely spicy foods, they don't hit me like that. It's a flavor to me

That’s what you got me thinking. The amount that people will pay for old juice boxes nowadays. It’s ridiculous. What people will go through just for a taste of nostalgia.
Might have to put one of these chips in the safe, wait 50 years.

I probably should hold onto them and years later say I have a forbidden item and sell it at auction

You sound pretty tuff cause even those chips make me cry. Funny thou. The tube of terror is even worse. I've never cried so much eating that stuff

No not at all about being tough, it's literally just a sensation that I enjoy when eating, I'm not sure if it's the endorphins or what, but I enjoy it.
Plus I probably burned my tastebuds over the years from always eating spicy shit. That being said, I'm definitely not going around eating carolina reapers straight or anything.

Yeah idk what the scoville difference is but those chips felt nowhere near as hot as a basic extract hot sauce, or even a reaper mash

Exactly. Even a lot of authentic Thai and Indian food gets way hotter. I'm not saying those chips weren't hot, but they didn't have me dying. A straight reaper extract sauce, or a straight reaper will have smoke coming out of your ears lol.

Paqui is having a bad year. I used to mail order around 32 bags of their Haunted Ghost Pepper chips, because they don't sell them in the stores around here now. Well they no longer use the same distribution company and haven't replaced them with another one. So I have no way of getting my Haunted Ghost Pepper chips now.
I can't believe you guys said One Chip Challenge wasn't that hot. I was absolutely miserable when I ate it. I wanted to put a bullet in my head because of how hot it was and I have a higher tolerance for hot food than anyone I know.

I did the 2021 one chip earlier this year and it kicked my ass The stomach cramps got me and the chip was not tasty, but it was fun. My fridge is full of super hot sauces and I have 3 versions of The Last Dab, but One Chip is quite intense. Only the whole, fresh peppers are hotter.
Wtf is wrong with you?

I'm the cmplete opposite, anything more spicy than a pickled jalapeño is a no go for me, even fresh jalepenos are too hot like a jalapeño popper, though I eat poppers because they are delicious but its over kill for me
I wouldnt go anywhere near this one chip challenge
I even think siracha is borderline too hot

Capsaicin is just like a drug in the way you get a tolerance to it. I used to have my nose running and tears in my eyes eating a basic thai stir fry dish, now it's impossible for me to find anything in restaurants or stores that I can get any burn from. If I go a week or two without eating anything spicy my tolerance drops a lot
I always avoid raw peppers though, for some reason my stomach doesn't respond to anything else but when I have raw reapers it feels like I have someone cattle prodding my insides, but with cooked/fermented/powdered/sauced reapers I'm fine

I did the 2020 one chip challenge and the 2021 challenge. The 2020 one was rediculously hot and destroyed me, but the 2021 chip was pretty tame.

I agree insofar as behavioral tolerance may be concerned... I can handle a lot of heat "in the moment". But (butt) physically, if I'm turning up the heat, and particularly if I'm consuming high spice loads in combination with alcohol, I'm all but guaranteed to have a 3am shit, and likely a 5am and 7am three-peat of the shituation.
It's the spicy pewps I can do without, and what typically keeps me in check with regard to what I'm shoveling in my face.
But I do love the hot stuff!
Never done the Paqui, had my time with extractives and all that... I don't really care for JUST heat, I want some flavor.
On that note, these calabrian peppers are super fruity and quite hot, very good on pizzas and pastas

Always good to jerk off from time to time.
Using dried chilis to make a proper chili was an eye opening experience too!

Yea dude, the only time I regretted eating anything really spicy, was this one type of beef jerky that was made with carolina reapers, which I've had plenty of foods made with those, but I guess because jerky is slower to breakdown it killed me. It was a small bag with one or two pieces. It wasn't the initial eating it that hurt, it was when I was trying to sleep at night. My insides were burning and cramping so bad, I could not sleep at all, I was tossing and turning, in and out of the bathroom, chuggin water, nothing was helping.
It honestly felt as bad as the stomach cramps I used to get in the peak of heroin withdrawal, and I was several years clean at the time and I remember telling myself it felt and reminded me of being in withdrawal again.
That's the only time that ever happened and I have no clue why because I've had hotter foods before. It was absolutely unbearably painful though.

When I was eating hot sauce on stuff the most, it started giving me hiccups every time even if the heat wasn't that bad, so I laid off since then

Damn that's wild.
RIP...I feel for his fam.
I'm curious what the actual mechanism/cause of death was though. The article mentions the cause has yet to be determined. Also mentions capsaicin potentially causing heart-rhythm issues in some folks which is one thing that came to my mind.

I love those Haunted Ghost Pepper chips from Paqui! For me those are the perfect level of "spicy", exactly the sort of level of heat/burn I'm looking for when it comes to chips/snacky foods.
The first bag of those I ever bought I almost ate the entire bag in one go lol. The flavor of the ghost pepper/chip is really good and that burn keeps me reaching for another chip.
I haven't tried the "one chip" though. I imagine it's substantially hotter/more intense than the ghost pepper chips.

I too seem to have developed more "tolerance" of sorts to capsaicin/spice over the years.
Either I'm just "used to it" combined with actually desiring a good burn/rush, and/or there is actual tolerance/less sensitivity to the cap which I feel is likely going on because I've seen videos of big pepper/hot heads munching down absurdly high levels of cap in various forms and not having much issues lol.
I have a relatively high tolerance to cap/the burn, far more so than any of my friends/fam, but munching on even a raw habanero will have my head ringing...with that said, part of me really enjoys the intensity/burn lol.
I have ate around 1/2 of a ghost pepper several times...That's where I draw the line lol. I certainly have curiosity about the reapers, but nah lol. A couple of the times I ate ghost peppers, the most uncomfortable aspect for me was actually this very peculiar pain I would get in my ears/internally like the inner portion of the ear canal. It was a throbbing sharp pain, I've never felt such a thing in a such a place before.
Over the years of consistently having capsaicin in my daily diet and periodically eating some super-hot stuff, the spicy poop/butthole burn is far less pronounced for me now...I do remember those ghost peppers on their way out tho lol.
I've had calabrian peppers in a few pasta-sauces, super bomb! Great flavor and def bring some heat.
And I think someone else mentioned it in the thread...but raw/fresh hot-peppers def get my stomach a bit knotted and cramped up. A few years ago I grew some "Sugar Rush Peach" peppers, some of them were far richer in capsaicin than others and one day I plucked one off the plant and it had me fuuucked up. Having ate a few the days before that were milder I was not expecting the wallop of heat, had me pacing around my backyard not knowing what to do with myself while my stomach had some gnarly pains/knots going on.
