Next shoebox ready, more aborts and hollow stems this time. The dense pinset was looking more promising, still cool!

I don’t know the whole bag looked really healthy. Maybe I’m not thankful now.
Can rhizomorphic growth on grain spawn be a sign of contamination???

There are different types of rhizomorphic mycelium. Clean spawn checklist for the new grower.
Quote:
Stipe-n Cap said:"Spikey" bacterially stressed mycelium and uncolonized grains, the first pic also has incongruous white patches.
A note on rhizomorphs: "Hyphal aggregation may fulfil migratory or connective roles in the case of rhizomorphs and mycelial cords which, being corporate structures, are often capable of far more rapid extension than individual hyphae, whilst exhibiting parallel patterns of branching and anastomosis" -Versatility and degeneracy p.25
Rhizomorphs are exploratory structures that will blend seamlessly with the surrounding mycelium once the grains have fully colonized, shifting from foraging/exploratory growth phase to exploitive phase which will result in pin formation if left for too long. The sort of spikey/sickly growth patterns pictured immediately below are not healthy rhizomorphs but likely an attempt by the mycelium to escape a contaminated environment:

I think you’re definitely right after checking that out. There’s a possibility there could be something hiding. I’m still going to spawn it to its own bin and see what happens. My other enigma bags don’t have the same type of growth.

That’s great write up. Bookmarked and thank you for sharing

Look for the piece that fell off the bottom of that. Screw it back on. Fixed.

That.
It's also important to periodically check the fittings on your PC. Sometimes things come loose that shouldn't fire through the ceiling like a rocket.
