pholiota adiposa vs hypholoma sublateritium
    #28553839 - 11/23/23 10:07 AM (2 months, 4 days ago)

In Stamets his book GGMM on p 244, he discusses hypholoma sublateritium, which he calls the Chestnut mushroom.  But other places refer to pholiota adiposa as the Chestnut mushroom.  Are these the same mushrooms? Stamets does not mention pholiota adiposa.  It would be helpful to have some reference that discusses these mushrooms and clarifies the situation.  Anyone have any ideas?

No, hypholoma sublateritium is a species, which is considered slightly poisonous in europe, whereas Hypholoma lateritium seems to be considered edible in the US. The english common names of mushrooms lack somehow in their descriptivenes, as the same common name is often used for multiple species... see "fairy ring mushroom" ... or the referred "chestnut mushroom" which also applies to several different species.

So the naming, even in Latin is, really confusing.

Agreed... In german language we often have quite a lot of different names for the very same mushroom species. E.g. the yellow chanterelle: Counted 39 names on this page
https://www.123pilzsuche-2.de/daten/details/Pfiffi.htm

And the latin names also were changed multiple times for the same species, because phylogeny of mushrooms is difficult ^^

"chestnut mushroom" is more of a nickname than anything proper. When confused always go by the Latin binomial

So, is pholiota adiposa the same mushroom as hypholoma sublateritium?
