Why do some cakes fair better than others?
    #2855067 - 07/04/04 01:39 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

After getting the first flush off of 12 cakes, i noticed that some cakes did far better than others, even though they were in the same fruiting chamber.

One cake especially, looked like it was going to be amazing. It had over 40 pins on it, but i think it was too many as they all aborted fairly soon, about 3 inches long most of them

Other cakes, with only maybe 10 pins, had magnificant caps. If a cakes grows too many pins, does it not have enough to get some to grow fully?

Overall im happy with the first flush. One very promising sign too, i did an experiment with one cake. I did not dunk or roll it before fruiting, it went from incubating straight to fruiting. It produced one little aborted pin, and took two weeks to do that. Then i dunked and rolled it, thinking it was probably dead (it didnt look too great) a week later it produced 4 huge caps, all fully opened and i was able to get a excellent print from them. I now have a syring BLACK with spores:)

do most people find this random pattern of sucess with cakes to be true? I really believe the 2nd flush will be a LOT better though, as it was with the first cake

Yes. Excessive pinsets will draw excessive nutrients from the cake/casing. Usually it is rare for this to cause total mass abortion, it normally lowers the overall yield potential of said cake/casing. Basically every mushroom that aborts is taking nutrients from those that are in the maturation stages...
