Attorney arrested in largest Omaha hallucinogen bust November 20, 2023 - KETV
'Psychedelic Mushrooms but on steroids': Investigators sound the alarm
OMAHA, Neb. — Omaha police are dealing with the largest drug bust of its kind in the city as they investigate a drug cooking operation where an area attorney is accused of manufacturing large amounts of a potent hallucinogen.
“It’s a psychedelic drug. It’s like psychedelic mushrooms but on steroids,” said Lt. Steve Fornoff, the Commander of the Omaha Police Narcotics Unit.
Investigators said they found at least 14 pounds of a chemical hallucinogen called DMT, or Dimethyltryptamine. The dark liquid was being stored in glass canning jars. At least one jar tested positive for fentanyl and heroin. Fornoff said the chemical is especially dangerous because if you have a pre-existing mental health condition, when you come off of the DMT high, that mental health condition is enhanced.
“What we believe is they’re trying to get people that are in the market for a psychedelic drug hooked on fentanyl and meth because they’ll take it thinking they want the psychedelic high and when they’re done, they’re hooked on the other drug,” said Fornoff.
Attorney Jonathan Lawler is under arrest and faces two felony drug charges. The 34-year-old is a private practice attorney with his office listed in the Blackstone area. His law license in Nebraska and Florida are suspended. Lawler graduated from UNO and Emory University Law School, where he was on the Dean’s List and was a standout student.
“This is a local attorney, so he knows the difference between right and wrong,” said Fornoff.
Police were called to a home in Omaha’s Florence area on October 15th. The landlord of the property reported that he found a possible drug cooking operation in his rental home. A man ran from the scene and police said he hid the jars in the woods nearby. Police arrested 47-year-old Christopher Mayeaux for possession and tampering with evidence.
Fornoff said there was a drug cooking set-up in the home where the cook was using common chemicals to make DMT and then cooking it down to crystal form so that it could allegedly be mixed with meth and other substances.
“I think he was working on his own, but I think he was in the process of making something he could mix with another drug,” said Fornoff, who also said this wasn't his first batch.
Lawler was arrested in Omaha on an outstanding warrant from Missouri for not showing up in court after a property damage accident. Fornoff said this type of DMT is potent and dangerous.
“You’ll start seeing things that aren’t there. You’ll start thinking you can do things you can’t do, like fly. You’ll see aliens and stuff,” said Fornoff.
Fornoff is warning recreational drug users that the likelihood of tainted street drugs is incredibly high right now, and they are extremely volatile and dangerous. Drug dealers often make fake prescription pills that have high levels of unpredictable and inconsistent fentanyl, which is highly addictive. A single grain of it can kill a person, impeding their lung function.
“Now we’re seeing 7 out of 10 pills has a lethal dose. So the likelihood you’re going to overdose on fentanyl now is extremely high and the chances of you dying from it are equally as high,” said Fornoff.
Fornoff said the DMT being made in the home on Tucker Street can be made into a paste to vape, or it can be added to marijuana and is undetectable. It can also be evaporated and turned into a crystals to combine it with other powdered or crystal drugs.
Fornoff said in Nebraska and 6 surrounding states, fentanyl has taken off as the number one drug they’re finding, responsible for overdoses and that it’s prevalent. So the fact that that this crossover drug was being created to possibly enhance the fentanyl drug operation is alarming. Fornoff said the fentanyl is coming from China and Mexico and Omaha is a hub for distributing it.
“Right now, it’s so dangerous to take any kind of drug not prescribed by a doctor or given from a pharmacist,” said Fornoff.
Lawler is due in court in late November to face drug charges.

Four mason jars of black liquid, the largest Omaha hallucinigen bust. DMT was to be mixed with fentanyl to get psychedelic users addicted. Facing 20+ years. What nonsense!

There's so much wrong, I really don't know where to start with this one,... In a very twisted way, I found the video kind of entertaining. Until I realized that this might be the only (dis)information people get. Ronald Reagan would be proud. Yikes.
Maybe the most peculiar statement is "Now we’re seeing 7 out of 10 pills has a lethal dose..." Wow. That could solve the "problem" of drug users prowling your streets if, on average, most of them are dead by the 3rd dose they try.

This is the single greatest piece of Anti-Omaha propaganda they could possibly produce. Letting us know that law enforcement is stuck firmly in the 1980's. I'll be sure to avoid spending any time or money there for another decade. Unless some opportunity to help guys like this presents itself.
I love the bit about "testing positive for fentanyl."
I bet a bunch of the bills in his wallet would test positive for cocaine, too. All part of his conspiracy to get people who spend money addicted to cocaine.
But yeah, I'm sure the upstanding people of Omaha have managed to steer clear of opiates up until now, which is why guys like this have to "get them hooked" with gateway drugs like DMT
I love how little press the ensuing court cases/plea deals get. So all the bullshit that detectives and arresting officers come up with gets thrown out, but quietly....so as not to tarnish the "win" in the record books...

4 jars of basified plant material..probably a couple grams of DMT at most. Fent in DMT? Is that actually a thing now or are the tests for fent just really shitty

Police drug tests are so shitty they will react to anything. There was a great news video done where they showed police tests reacting to fucking air and testing positive for whatever the test was (meth, cocaine, etc.). If you stick a drug test strip into a mixture of lye and acid, your going to make it go haywire.
There is a reason why they call them flyover states because there's literally no reason to go to shithole's like Nebraska unless you know good people living there and are visiting them. But those kinda police departments don't care to be correct, they think they've just busted an active drug laboratory akin to a meth lab. A court drug expert will come in and clearly explain they were making the drug and how much DMT they estimate to actually be in there, but odds are the judge just goes with the police.
It's pretty crazy how far red states have gotten lately, they really are trying to go full Nazi against progressive types.

Yeah, they'll probably do the usual bullshit with weighing the container and all reagents when calculating quantity.
But something tells me the fentanyl thing was just a bit of PR/character assassination. They probably know deep down that nobody gives a fuck about DMT, assuming they even know what it is. So if they can spin it into a fentanyl story, they can go for some public sympathy.
If this guy gets a halfway decent lawyer (which I imagine he would 🙄), then that whole "he was trying to hook people on fentanyl via DMT" theory shouldn't even make it to court.

Update ...
Landlord has to demolish house down to the studs after psychedelic drug bust November 21, 2023 - KETV
Omaha lawyer charged with cooking up drugs: 'He's the nicest kid you've ever met in your life'
OMAHA, Neb. — An Omaha landlord is gutting his one-bedroom rental house after Omaha police busted a major psychedelic drug manufacturing operation there. John Mahoney owns the house in the Florence area, and he and his wife Stacey live next door.
“Me and my wife, it’s hard to get over because we try to help people. I’ve done that my whole life,” said Mahoney.
In September, he rented the home to an attorney he’s known for about four years after he had him draw up some legal papers for him.
“He’s the nicest kid you’ve ever met in your life. Sweetest kid. Everybody that met him said he was the nicest kid ever,” said Mahoney.
The tenant was 34-year-old Jonathan Lawler, an Omaha attorney whose private practice was last listed in the Blackstone area.
Mahoney said the first month of the living arrangement was great. Mahoney visited the rental house almost daily and was working on making improvements for the next tenant. He said Lawler told him he was only staying for a few months because he was in between houses and went through a divorce. The two spent many evenings talking and Mahoney said he felt like Lawler was a friend. He said he never saw Lawler leave for work, but he was kind to neighbors and had two dogs which he loved.
“And then you realize he’s got some issues,” said Mahoney.
Mahoney said Lawler paid rent the first month, but then things got sketchy. He said Lawler would anger quickly, pick fights, and avoid him.
“His mom came and paid his rent. Then last month, he couldn’t pay his rent,” said Mahoney.
Mahoney said security cameras showed people coming and going from the home at all hours of the night.
In mid-October, Mahoney went into the home with a contractor to work on improvements. He said a strange man was inside the home, and that’s when Mahoney discovered a drug cooking operation.
“I knew something was wrong when I looked down and saw the blower, and the heat lamp and thought, this was not right,” said Mahoney.
He left the home and called 911. In the meantime, he said the man in the house had grabbed 4 quart-sized glass jars full of a dark liquid and fled the home. Police found them in a nearby words and arrested 47-year-old Christopher Mayeaux for tampering and possession. Unknown to Mahoney, Mayeaux had been living in the basement of the rental home.
The jars contained 14 pounds of a homemade chemical hallucinogen known as DMT, or Dimethyltryptamine. Omaha Police believe the drug was being produced to hook psychedelic users into other drugs, like fentanyl. One jar tested positive for heroin and fentanyl. DMT is a potent hallucinogen.
“It’s like psychedelic mushrooms but on steroids,” said Lt. Steve Fornoff, Commander of the Omaha Police Narcotics Unit who wants to warn people that the drug is in our area and it's been discovered in a large quantity.
After police removed all evidence, Mahoney was left with a toxic mess to clean up. He said estimates from clean-up companies to make his house safe again ranged from $7500 to $12,000.
“A table had a whole pile of marijuana on it, a spoon, a syringe that looked like it was ready to go in someone’s veins,” said Mahoney.
Mahoney took snapshots all over the house. Needles and small blow torches covered windowsills and tables. He said there were hundreds of needles everywhere. He said the place had a strong odor of sweet-smelling chemicals that permeated the furniture, carpet, and walls. He said he wore hazardous materials gear and a special mask as he spent weeks cleaning out the home. Next, he’ll remove plaster and carpet to make the home safe.
He doesn’t know what he’d say to Lawler if he saw him again.
“I really just hope he gets help. It’s so bad. I get emotional about it and my wife knows, because I’ve sat there at night and cried. Because, he was a good kid,” said Mahoney.
Omaha Police said this is the largest drug bust of its kind in our area.
“It can be made into paste that you can put in a vape pen or you can evaporate the liquid and what’s left is a bunch of crystals and you mix that with other drugs, like fentanyl, meth, and cocaine,” said Fornoff.
Fornoff said chances of getting a fatal level of fentanyl in drugs you buy off the streets is now 70-percent. Fornoff believes this drug cooking operation was underway to get people who are interested in psychedelics addicted to other more potent drugs.
Lawler graduated with honors from UNO and Emory University Law School. He faces charges in Missouri for leaving the scene of a property accident, and not showing up in court. He just served 2 days in jail in Fremont County, Iowa, for a prior DUI conviction and he now faces two felonies in Nebraska on drug charges. His law license is suspended in Nebraska and Florida.

This is the kind of story you can only sell to people who are completely naive with regard to these drugs. Maybe there really was fentanyl or heroin present. But maybe not; it makes little sense, and I don't get how anyone can expect even drug-naive people to believe "a fatal level of fentanyl in drugs you buy off the streets is now 70-percent" without some explanation or qualification.
Perhaps someday we'll find out what was really going on there.

I mean the hundreds of needles are really sketchy. Maybe they were using heroin and fentanyl, and making the DMT.
Regardless, it's quite sad America is in such a broken state of disrepair that were at the point where if you live in a red state like Nebraska, I'm just not that sad for what happens to you.
You have to know just how bad things have gotten in those fascist pockets of red states if you live there, most people know who live elsewhere, so if you choose to do something like this in shithole areas, beware. Their basically nazi's out there for anyone they don't like.

They'll spin shit any which way.
It seems unlikely that a house with IV drug users in it would come up completely devoid of charge-able opiates or stimulants when the police raided.
Could just as easily be spore syringes, insulin for a diabetic, etc.
Definitely sounds like there was some sketchy drama around the homestead there, but I'm not gonna take the cop, landlord, and local reporter's word for it.

Wow, another scapegoat. Just the time of the season for trying to get psychedelics illegalized by fascists again I guess. I wonder how much somebody was paid to sprinkle fentanyl on everything at the scene?
Because making somebody pass out when they’re trying to trip on DMT. Sounds like that would piss off the person who wanted DMT. I know I wouldn’t take any tainted drugs from that prick again.
