1st casing questions
    #2854944 - 07/03/04 11:51 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have just finished casing my 2 pint jars of rye... When I put the top layer (1:2 RATIO) I did a miscalculation and coulnt cover the whole casing. When I say this im talking about letting some minor milimetric layer holes where you can see myc. Now, I have no more verm to put on to cover, so here are my qeustions (please consider that there no verm in my town so I may not get more verm)...
Am I screwed?
How much should I wait before covering these holes?
What else can I use to cover these holes?
Maybe peat moss but maybe that can actually do worse
Please name some easy to get materials...
Dont consider humidifying materials because these casings also have bottom layers...
thanks in advance

How deep are the substrate/casing layers? Too little casing is bad because it causes overlay.... Coir works, or peat/lime. I dislike straight vermiculite, anyway. Peat is fine as long as you mix lime in and pick all the weird looking shit out of it.

cant find more verm or coir. I have a big bag of peat moss and can find lime. The layer isnt too thick I'd say 5mm thick less than a cm for sure. Why do you say I should pick what weird looking shit out of what (lime i suppose)?
I quote: "from uncased substrates(PF cakes, bulk straw and other subtrates). Thus it doesn't necessarily need a functioning casing layer, although it clearly does benefit" from What Is Overlay? in the FAQ section...
Maybe I shouldnt worry about that...

dont live in the states so no time to order online. The exact transaltion to spanish is uncertain so I dont know precisely what to ask for in pet stores. when I ask by its use, they dont have it. Im still gonna try but what would happen if I cant. And how much time do I have till myucelium strats sprouting (consider that my jars took more than 2 weeks to colonize)...
bye

Its already cased... :S
I dont know if a top layer is so important as I quoted before but still Im worried.
How much time do I have given the circumstances named above till mycelium strats sprouting an I can expect overlay...?

btw, what is he using in his casings? : http://www.shroomery.org/index/the/default/par/22744

I'm no expert in coco coir but a casing sustrate isnt supposed to have nutrients.

Out of the peat -- there are usually sticks and stuff in the peat moss. Trichoderma loves these. Prolly the reason most people dislike peat (IMO, the best casing material.)
