I only ran one tub so far but zero overlay. Ran it uncased. Was going to run the next one cased to observe the differences. You use a casing?

never cased. I run unmodified purple handled shoeboxes and mine have always just fruited fine.

Now I’m wondering if that could be what’s causing it. On this batch I didn’t go after the most aggressive rhizo growth either. The batch I have on grains right now I did. I’ll probably run 2 tubs, one cased and one uncased to see if that could affect anything as well. Also could just be genetics though 🤷♂️

Perhaps a clearer photo

To get great cultures from a Nat print, throw spores on a bunch of plates. When they’re about 50% colonized, transfer the fastest growing myc to new plates. As long as those new plates are clean, forget about them until they fruit. When the pins are about to drop spores, throw each pin in a grain jar and you’re good to go.😊

Blah. I never get pins on my plates. I have one several months old but still no pins. Thought it was my LME so I bought a new batch but my agar still doesnt resemble a lot of agar pics on here. Maybe its the agar agar itself, I use telephone brand.

Got a tub of marshmallow overlay that was spawned around 6 weeks ago, decided to try harvesting it so I can rehydrate the sub and get a few fruits out of it. The sub itself was only about 1.5 in thick, so the overlay was 2x deeper than the substrate in some areas.
It wasn't easy to remove and a fair bit of the top layer got ripped up with the overlay despite my best efforts. Debating if I should slap on a casing layer on now or just let it go wild again and see what happens.

Any ideas what causes overlay? I've often felt PE blobs are akin to keloid scars for mushrooms, like the primordia get damaged by low humidity and just keeps trying to repair.

I don't know if casing will help or not. It would probably take longer if you do case it.
I have 4 nats shoeboxes that have finished colonizing, and none seem to be developing overlay. Somehow I'm still only seeing mushrooms in one tub. They are all different cultures that were spawned at the same time.

You need to clone that and grow it like "Enigma" or one of the other mutants. You already picked out a name.

I think you should call it "Iceberg".

This sounds like a fun project to make the most out of sub-optimal genetics. I took a few clones from the healthier looking areas today, will be interesting to see how this behaves on agar.

I do like Iceberg! It takes a while longer than fruits, but it still bruises up with an interesting pattern that fits the name.

Next time I'll probably "fruit" in a tray instead of a shoebox so I can just slice the top off rather than pull chunks out. BE is an interesting question, unfortunately I didn't really take notes when spawning these tubs but I'll keep track next time and post the results.

This is day 14 since spawn. Ez dial 66 qt mono. Substrate depth is 4" and is a mix of 10lb cvg 5lb composted cow poo and a pound of composted horse poo and two grain spawn bags. I use a half inch psuedocasing of cvg with added lime for calcium and contam resistance. I have ran this exact setup before several times and never had an issue with overlay,
but that could be luck.

Can't wait to snatch some actual nat spores. I've been wanting to grow them for a while now but they've been so hard to come across in the EU. Especially shady even, with the whole Natal SS mislabeling shenanigans
