Perspiring fungus?
    #2854638 - 07/03/04 07:59 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Two days ago, after a long rain, small brain shaped fungi (approximately two inches in diameter) appeared all over a tree stump. Each also had a dimpled surface in which beads of water seemed to be collecting. Later in the day, after everything had dried out, I checked back to find water still pooling in the dimples and, apparently, to be coming from the fungus itself. Today there was no rai at all and the liquid still remained. On inspection, it turned out to be fairly viscous.

Is this a common attribute of some fungus? Would anyone happen to know what purpose it serves? Thanks for any info that can be provided, I tried researching this myself but same up empty handed.

I checked out some pictures of stinkhorns, and it is definately not one. I used the term fungus opposed to mushroom because they had no definative stem or cap. I removed one and it was connected at the base (obviously) but the entire fruit appeared as just a fungal growth.

In addition, the things are a brown/orange color.

Try checking against various species of Hydnellum. Hydnelum peckii often has red droplets of liquid, and some of the others will sometimes produce droplets also. The ones I find are normally found on the forest floor.

Happy mushrooming!
