Why cant i make a succesful cake?
    #2854468 - 07/03/04 06:35 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have made 6 cakes so far and everyone was contaminated... The first 4 I really messed up on, but these other 2 I thought I did perfectly. I followed every singlestep precisely in the Simple Cubensis Growing Technique except I have a 10 psi cooker and not a 15. Do you think that I should get a 15 psi cooker? Both times I got this greymold (cobweb mold?) Bah! Also one thing I noticed that I thought shouldnt be happening, when I took my last 2 jars out of the PC they had water on / near the holes where I inject the spores.. I covered with aluminum foil but it doesnt seem to be working, you think I should try that breathable tap instead? Thanks in advance.

There could be many reasons for this...bad syringes, low sterilzation times, not enough pressure (get a 15psi, not flaming the needle, etc etc.
DO you have any pictures? Perhaps what you are seeing is rhizomorphic mycelial mushroom growth.

it cant be mushroom growth, it is COMPLETLY grey, no white at all. I have a cake that i have had for 2 1/2 weeks and its completly covered in grey, as will my other 2 cakes (i can see grey in them). I'm just going to get a 15 psi PC and breathable tape, and yes I was flaming the needles and then shooting out a little bit to cool it down. If i can get pictures i will, but i dont have a digi, my friends do though.

Dude, you're not putting the foil on right, if you're ending up with water under it. How hard is this to understand?

If you have a 10 psi PC then try PCing longer, an extra 20 to 30 minutes should do it.
Regarding the water, try using some kind of base to get the jars a bit higher. You can also try wrapping up the whole jar with aluminum foil, you have to cut a bigger piece of foil, lay it on the table, place the jar on the center of the foil and wrap it all up, make sure the water doesn't enter from above. More important than the rest, you should take care of the water level inside the PC, it should be just at mid level of the bottom jars.

I've ahd quite a few successful cakes and I don't use a PC at all. Maybe your water is/was to high. Did you thoroughly spray down everything where you inoculated your jars? Lysol and Oust are your best friends.
