DIY grain drying rack 2

Really got tired of waiting around for grains to dry or how much room it took up! If you’re in the same boat then maybe this could be of use to you! Super simple and if you can read a tape measure and drive a screw in, then you’re all set!
The partially finished product in use:

Now I plan on adding 2 more trays, which explains the gap difference. Also, if your on FB marketplace much, looks for bakers rack being sold first and you might get lucky.
Materials needed: -Wood (About $70 worth) I was going to go with select pine so I would have to sand anything.. after figuring it would cost around $200 in lumber, I decided I would be sanding lol. So I went with the cheapest of the cheap! 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” furring strips for $2.98 a piece. I only bought 9 figuring it would be enough but I miscalculated and came up short. Get 12-15 minimum! Better to have too much than not enough. Then you’ll need 3/4” x 1 1/2” furring strips for $1.48 a piece. 18 of them was more than enough. -Screws: 2 1/2” or so and 1 1/4” or so (already had these at home) -1/2” staples. (Had these already at home) -Pet resistant window screen (48” x 84”) $21 -Wheels to roll this thing around easily 4 x $3.79 = $16
Total cost in materials if you already have the hardware -$107
Tools needed: Miter saw Tape measure Square Pencil Hammer Staple gun Drill and bits Tape Clamps are helpful but not a must Sander and paper Utility knife

Cut your wood- For the frame use the 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” pieces 4 x 60” for the uprights 8 x 22 1/2” for the sides 8” 24 1/2” for the front and back crossmembers
For the window screens use the other pieces If you want 6 trays right away: 24 x 24” 18 x 21” 12 x 7”
You’ll need some additional wood for the back stops on the trays and tray “slide supports” I don’t really share this part in post because I don’t like the way I did it. I’d recommend trying something else to keep it more aesthetic. 12 x 1 1/2” of the 3/4” x 1 1/2” 12 x 25 1/2”
Down to the build

Measure out the window screen while it’s still packaged. Find the center and wrap some tape around it tightly. Cut it in half with a utility knife. On your work bench, draw out a 2’ x 2’ template. Pull the rolls out, weight it down and pull it tight. Use a straight edge and cut it flush with the line. Cut out 6 sheets of screen.
Grab 2 long window screen wood strips and 2 short ones. Clamp them together. Lay the screen down and staple it down while make sure to keep pulling the screen nice and tight. Grab 2 more longer pieces of wood and 1 short one. Lay them on top of the screen, opposite the way of the bottom ones and screw it all down. Flip it over and screw some more. One side on top will be left open to put the 2 7” pieces. I left this part open to scoop the grains out of the tray easily into a bucket.
Repeat for all 6 screens
The frame: For this part, it’s pretty self explanatory and I’m actually starting to get tired of typing this and have a lot of grains i need to get into the PCs lol. Go off the picture and it’s pretty easy. Don’t have to be too precise on anything here really.

Flip it over and throw the wheels on.
Now add the back stops to the trays and supports for the trays. I’m not really going to go into depth about this part because I honestly don’t like the way I did it.
Hope this helps at least 1 person on here haha.
I didn’t paint or coat any of the wood but probably will in the future to increase longevity.

this is really neat, but have you not had success with no-soak grain prep? Yoshi's tek seems pretty reliable.

I don’t soak my grains but I do like boiling them. I follow Bods whole oat tek for that. Don’t plan on changing that part much honestly

I just built this - thank you for the write up!
Long gone are the days of supporting a big window screen between two chairs.
I'd post a picture, but my woodworking is laughable and I'm not feeling funny about it
