reincarnation theories complement karma theories but they are also applicable to ordinary daily life and sleep cycle death.
I can be a little unnerved at the idea of reincarnation. It opens the possibility of reincarnating into uncomfortable or hellish realities, where as in my present mind I might find more peace in a never ending blackness.

I find more peace in not having to give up some measure of logical integrity to believe souls leave the body and find a new host, or that there is a heaven or hell.

Death sucks. I guess I have to speak somewhat childishly here - since some people say that fear of death is overcome in the childhood, but I never did.
I still get uneasy at the thought. I haven't felt comfortable accepting any higher power or any vision of the afterlife, I'm still an atheist.
However, I struggle with the idea of a timeline for life, and a definite end-point. I want to be alive. Even though I've had troubles in my life, I ultimately want it to continue. Seeing it turn to blackness scares me.
As I see it, fear of death is a natural reflection of joy of life, how couldn't we fear life's end if we like life?
I wanted to ask how I can be comfortable around this question, even from an atheistic perspective - how can atheism deal with my desire for my life to continue on and on, my desire to keep living?

Start small by noticing the little desires you have each day. What happens when those desires are unfulfilled? Really sit with that feeling and try to give it some space for understanding.
I would also suggest getting a little uncomfortable each day. Cold shower, walk to the store/work instead of driving etc. I’ll even leave a little bit of water in my ear after I shower and sit with it through meditation.
Another helpful exercise is giving away things you feel attached to. Once again start small but it’s a nice practice of letting go.

Nice post. A person doesn't need to "meditate" to contemplate and work with feelings. There are potential issues involved. I think the concept of being okay with how things are is helpful. I wouldn't fault a youngish person for fear of death. I wouldn't fault an older person for having a preference for remaining alive.
Feedback loops of 'not want' create a cage. Higher level perspective, it's okay to not want (or to want/can't have), fosters acceptance, avoids judgement. At some point the cycle begins to get "old" and can die for a new perspective. But trying to rush isn't prudent. Fear is an ability (think skill to develop), not something to bemoan.
"hello darkness my old friend".
Ain't no way I'm leaving water in my ears though!

I'm a great source of practice. Every time you think about spending money, send it to me instead. It may seem undesirable at the time but it's just practice.
