Is there any way to know what kind of wood these colored woodchips are made of? I know mushrooms don't like cypress, cedar, redwood- cupressaceae family wood. Or eucalyptus. What other kind of wood don't they like?

They love eucalyptus from what I’ve seen. Redwood is naturally antifungal I think. Just about any hardwood is fine and even pine has worked.

For sure. I think the weed control fabric the gardeners put under wood chips is annoying. I think it prevents mushrooms from growing. It also disintegrates after a while and leaves a bunch of plastic fabric pollution in the soil. Also, weeds eventually grow over it anyway.

Went out today to a regular spot. Found a couple dozen fruitsa and left lots and lots of pins. Unfortunately, another woman was foraging and when I saw she was going over the area I just scoured I said leave those pins! Theyll grow big. I was being friendly, but she was such an asshole to me. Led with" It's always a man that tells me what to do" I was being friendly. People are so teritoral. So much for community.

Allenii in rural western Sonoma County, popping up despite the cold. No rain lately, but we've been absolutely socked in with thick fog the last few mornings.

glad to see that fog is still pushing up some fruits in some places, but mostly ive just been seeing patches that are getting super dried out by now. despite the general lack of rain this season so far, im surprised by all the patches ive come across in the past week or so. heres some from today :

i think im gonna take a break from hunting until this next system rolls through next week, hopefully its arriving in time to push the season back into swing again

Best types of wood medium to host PNW cold loving Psilocybe species of mushrooms. [Re: Pokepoler] 1

Hello, I'm Rob C in San Jose. I have been hunting/gathering wild Psilocybin mushrooms in California and Oregon for a little more than 40 years now. A field guide on the subject that I had purchased in 1981 stated that the cold loving, wood substrate inhabiting Psilocybin species (P. cyanescens, P. semilanceata, etc.) common to the Pacific North West region of N. America will grow on any type of wood EXCEPT Cedar and Redwood. My personal observations over the years support this narrative. While I have many times observed Psilocybin mycelium growing on Eucalyptus, Oak, Pine, as well as a multitude of other wood species, I have never seen it inhabiting a Redwood or Cedar wood substrate. Just putting my two cents in the 'collective knowledge' bin here. Happy hunting to everyone, may you find that which you seek. And remember that oftentimes the true treasure is the journey itself.

Indeed, there's been virtually no rain and yet I've had my best season yet. The fog and morning dew at the coast has kept things going well in spots that have plenty of ground cover

Yeah, I'm holding off until the rains as well. I went back to hopefully harvest the big allenii patch I left to mature last week, but instead found another shoveled trough. Not sure if this is a hunter or a land maintenance person. Hrm. No worries though, plenty of cyans around that weren't dug up:

I think we're about to head into the peak of the season and hopefully my other spots come alive soon. Happy hunting everyone!

For me, the biggest flushes the last previous three years I e been hunting all came mid December to mid January. Seems to be the sweet spot. At least in the valley.

Same here at the coast. But that being said, this early season has been great even though the rain has been limited. So I’m anticipating the peak window to be bonkers. Things are primed here. Lots of tall grass ready for the explosion.

Rob1C, that’s cool you’ve been hunting them that long! OG hunter, much respect to you. Have you noticed them becoming more common as more hunters are out there expanding patches and spending spores?
Also curious about your P. semilanceata experience. How far south have you found them on the west coast? I tried many times to find them in CA and I’ve gone to the correct habitat near the boarder but my timing has been off I guess. In OR, do you hunt them on public land or do you creep private spots? I’m always worried some hillbilly farmer is gonna shoot my ass.
Also to your point Redwood and cedar are incredibly anti fungal which makes them great wood as an outdoor building material and def added to their (especially Redwood’s) deforestation.

Took a stroll around the South Bay today. Found the largest patch of (pretty dried up) allenies I’ve ever found! I’d guess a half pound dry when all is said and done. Huzzah!

Those allenii can take over of conditions are right. Two years ago, I found over 3.5 lbs dried of P. allenii during the season.
