If anyone has any tips about hunting actives in coastal dunes LMK...Not asking for spots, I'm mostly just curious if they're associated with a particular plant/habitat or zone within the dunes? I've heard "they're in the lupins", and they're in the ice-plants, and in the clumps of dune grass.
.
I haven’t hunted dunes up there but yeah I’ve heard lupin and also under blackberry bramble (it’s leaves and dead branches are good food sources for the cyans)
Further north when hunting Azzies I seem to always have best luck right at the transition zone between tree cover and pure dune grass.

Checked a few SF spots mostly still very dry. Found a couple in shady wet areas.

I just finished mulching my backyard in colorado and the mulch the houseowner provided was that black alder mulch I always see cyans and alleni's growing out of.
Anyone know if it's possible to try and get them to fruit in colorado? I thought about getting some spores, inoculating them into soaked mulch, and then spread that around the rest of the mulch and hoping I can maybe luck into a varietal that can survive the mild winter were having here as it's much more similar to PNW weather this year.
If you know any cultivation techniques you could clone a wild fruit on agar and then expand to grain and then to chips. This is a good thread I didn’t copy any specific page you’ll have to weed through to find info you find helpful. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24673753/fpart/675#28520964
I found a small handful in SF yesterday another friend found good allenii and cyan patch. They are really starting to show up in the city.

Rob1C said: Hello, I'm Rob C in San Jose. I have been hunting/gathering wild Psilocybin mushrooms in California and Oregon for a little more than 40 years now. A field guide on the subject that I had purchased in 1981 stated that the cold loving, wood substrate inhabiting Psilocybin species (P. cyanescens, P. semilanceata, etc.) common to the Pacific North West region of N. America will grow on any type of wood EXCEPT Cedar and Redwood. My personal observations over the years support this narrative. While I have many times observed Psilocybin mycelium growing on Eucalyptus, Oak, Pine, as well as a multitude of other wood species, I have never seen it inhabiting a Redwood or Cedar wood substrate. Just putting my two cents in the 'collective knowledge' bin here. Happy hunting to everyone, may you find that which you seek. And remember that oftentimes the true treasure is the journey itself.
Rob1C, that’s cool you’ve been hunting them that long! OG hunter, much respect to you. Have you noticed them becoming more common as more hunters are out there expanding patches and spending spores?
Also curious about your P. semilanceata experience. How far south have you found them on the west coast? I tried many times to find them in CA and I’ve gone to the correct habitat near the boarder but my timing has been off I guess. In OR, do you hunt them on public land or do you creep private spots? I’m always worried some hillbilly farmer is gonna shoot my ass.
Also to your point Redwood and cedar are incredibly anti fungal which makes them great wood as an outdoor building material and def added to their (especially Redwood’s) deforestation.

Haven’t hunted much at all this season I’ve been too obsessed with edible mushrooms and sitting in the woods. I love the dedication of the office park hunters what a dull place to hunt, but what amazing rewards you can find.
I ran into a few other hunters in SF they all said this year has been outstanding for them. Most my patched didn’t produce much or my timing was off. Next year I’ll try and find new spots (maybe this season too if I can get out there again before it’s over)
It seems the mycelium network is strong access the board form the last few seasons of good rainfall let’s hope this trend continues 🤞 Hers is a nice little cluster with green grass and sunshine from Friday.

Nice to see some Gymn’s in the feed! I was up the Sonoma coast yesterday hunting edibles but had an eye out in the pine needles for Psilocybe pelliculosa which I know is super rare that far south but the ground is good and soaked for psilocybes so i thought there was a chance.
