Moisture buildup
    #2852230 - 07/02/04 05:17 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

My friend is seeing a slight bit of moisture forming on the walls of his grow chamber....does that mean things are too humid? If so what does he need to do to correct the problem.

He is using a rubbermaid, clear sides and white lid. It is about a foot tall and will hold 6 half pint jars. In the bottom he has almost two inches of perlite and his water line is about half way down the perlite. He added a tsp of hydrogen peroxide. There are only 2 cakes in the chamber. They were put in this morning after being cold shocked last night in cold water via the fridge. What do you guys think?

Water on the inside of your grow chamber walls is a good thing.

there is really no such thing as too humid... all it will do is allow for some whispy mycelium growth

I have read about mushrooms being soggy if too humid. Is this correct?

^^^hes not doing casings. there are few occasions too humid conditions will make cakes not pin just get fuzzy, but condensation on the wall is not an accurate sign of humidity. invest in a hygrometer.

I'm sure Prisoner #1 knows what hes talking about and read that this guy is on cakes. quit being pretentious. I'm gonna leave it at that and quit hijacking this guy's thread.

After checking this morning my friend saw that the walls are beginning to sweat but only a little bit. He can see two streaks where drops ran down the side. This is his first grow and he was trying to get some ready before the 16th. He dunked two of his cakes that were fully covered in mycelium but he is sure the middle wasnt done colonizing as it was only June 16th when they were injected. The method used was brf and vermiculite. They weren't forming primordia yet when dunked was this a mistake? They seem to still be ok. This morning he noticed the myc had grown overnight and there seems to be small balls forming about the size of a half of a BB towards the bottom of the cakes. This a good sign?

Also, the condensation is a good rough idea of what humidity levels are. You do not need exact measurements of humidity.

If the walls have light condensation, you have roughly low 90% humidity.

If the walls are sweating lightly, you have roughly mid 90% humidity.

If the walls are dripping you have high, to 100% humidity.

For cakes, you want 95% plus. So, if he is only seeing a "slight" bit of moisture, he should try and get it up more.

This isn't necessarily acurate. If the temperatures are in the low 70's, you can get dense condensation on the walls even at 85%. If your temperatures are more in the range of around 80F, even at 95% humidity, you won't see a whole lot of condensation, just a little wet to the touch. I have seen casings at 85% dripping with condensation because the temperature got to 68F.

The idea is to try and guesstimate the dew point. Either way, things get too hasty without a hygrometer. If you're not condifent in your techniques, I would go over to Target or somewhere, and you can get yourself a fairly nice hygrometer for around $10. I personally prefer Oregon Scientific's products, although a little more expensive.

The fact they were not forming primorida yet is no big deal. I would never wait for them to form in the jar.

The small balls at the bottom of the cake are a good thing.

Go to walmart and get a cheap meter

What are the small balls?........seems that 4 hours later they are twice the size they were this morning. Oh and if you guys could help my friend out he keeps the temp in his house around 75? If he is seeing slight sweating on the walls of his grow chamber around what is his humidity in there? He searched all over town today and couldnt find the hygrometer.

alright.......do you guys normally wait the recommended 23 days before starting to fruit or do you cold shock and start when the cake is colonized?

thanks for the link but.....I'm sick of reading for my buddy. I feel like I know what I'm doing better than he does however I'm not the one doing this project so I wanted some human conversational feedback...

The temperature is remaining steady at 80.4 degrees F. The humidity is only 50 percent....what does he need to do to get it up. The sides are sweating.
