Amanita calyptroderma
Death caps have a solid cap margin, more of a greenish cap, thinner universal veil remnants on the cap and thinner volva remnants at the stem base.

Neat, this one’s just more grey brown compared to pictures I’ve seen. I got to see Dave Aurora speak the other day and he really hyped them up. Lots of them still in the egg stage.

You gonna try it LT? I keep finding them (not confirmed by someone like Alan before I discarded them) but are still too chicken to eat amanitas.

Yeah, I hear you about being chicken🤣 Dave made such a good point about all these other mushrooms we eat that have close lookalikes, but how we tend to lump Amanita into some are poisonous so best avoid all of them, but the characteristics that separate them are pretty clear. I still got mixed feeling about it, some of my friends say coccora should be more orange, or it’s still risky, so I’m a bit hesitant. I do want to try them just to get more familiar. Reminds me of my first porchini I found, I was so excited but my grandma said “don’t eat it” and it took me years to get over that. For these I’m going to wait for some of the eggs to mature, and get some better photos. They pop up every year in the same spot, so it would be about a canner load of pickled mushrooms each fall, which would be nice. Still nervous.

I'm nervous about that one too. Not that I think it's a death cap, but the coccora I find in western oregon are way more orange than that. I think waiting for more eggs to mature is a great idea. Don't whoopsie pope yourself

I've eaten some Amanita jacksonii, they were okay, but I think I overcooked them. The flavor kind of just disappeared. It's a shame though, a lot of Amanitas are quite tasty, but people tend to lay out a blanket rule of "No Amanitas," even though like you pointed out, many characteristics are fairly obvious

Dave had these pictures of this village in Japan that was known for their use and preparation of A. muscaria for food. He said he found lots of porcini and said he couldn't give them away to anyone, but he would see all these older people carrying baskets any muscaria out of the hills. Just how your raised I guess. Never pass up the chance to see that guy talk. wonder what his profile on here is

Once you find a lot of coccora and a lot of death caps you'll be able to reliably tell them apart in under a second. They are only superficially similar.
You don't need to be afraid to try them, but it is a good idea to post pics before consuming your first couple of times.
Next time you find either species spend a minute taking a close look at them, including the stem base and cross section.
