I'm not sure, but I heavily misted the casing layer, then lightly misted the underside of the lid (which has been flipped the whole time) before the surface colonized. Since it was about 40% colonized I've seen condensation on the walls and lid so I haven't misted. I was concerned that patch was contam, since there are some discolored droplets along that short wall in the top of the photo to the right of the patch. I figured that was metabolites.
some metabolites won't stop this from fruiting. when did you case? certainly not at full colonization??
I added the casing layer on top of the mix of substrate and grainspawn right after I mixed it up on the 13th, so there was about an inch to an inch and a half of straight substrate above the mix. This colonized fully over the course of the past two weeks to what you're seeing now.

a true casing is applied at 100% colonization. just my 2c
edit: what you would apply at spawn is - in my book - a thin layer to cover all grain (to prevent contam)

edit: did you consider a casing? how is the ratio of spawn to bulk? ape tends to blob on first flush when not cased and in highly nutritious medium
That’s mold you should cut out like 1/3 of the sub around that spot. Ape is the absolute worst kind to have something like this happen because it’s so slow to pin and mature.
Speaking of mold, my trash pile is full of surprises this week. I had three tubs I spawned and 4-5 days later checked on them and two had zero myc with little patches of VERY wispy white mold, like so thin you could easily miss it just glancing. The third had gotten loaded with gnats with eggs on the lid and everything. So I sat them in the garage, today is trash day so I went to dump them out, the one with gnats had basically a canopy of pins with a circle of green mold so I dumped it. The two with the wispy mold seem to just not give a fuck about it.

Do you think this is enough of a "clear" section to remove or should I just go straight across that top section from left to right?

Thanks, and do I just leave that edge of the cake exposed for now or do I try to adjust the liner?

If you're seeing it on the surface, it's much larger in the sub. I'd toss the whole thing, but if you're going to cut it, go big. at least half.
