Possible Agaricus Silvaticus?
    #2852285 - 07/02/04 07:54 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Found this Agaricus today:
a. Midwest, under mixed oaks and red pine
b. Pinkish turning brown, free, close but not crowded
c. Cap: 1"-4", stem 2"-4"
d. White stem bruising pink to dark red.
e. Light Brownish scales on cap
f. Spore print chocolate Brown
g. Bruises pinkish to dark red
h. Smells like button mushrooms, not distinctive. Definately not reminiscent of almonds, like A. subrufescens.

I used this key: http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/agaricus.html

The way you named them is accurate : "possible Agaricus silvaticus". As the key you linked to notes, there is a cluster of very similar species there. For added fun, I wouldn't bet that all of those named species are actually all different species, or that all of the actual species have been named.

The way many professionals handle cases like this is to refer to the collection as being "close to A. silvaticus", which can be written as "A. cf. silvaticus".

Dr Rick Kerrigan is working as a member of a group to resolve these issues in the genus Agaricus, but with little or no funding and mostly on their own time, using molecular biology. It will probably be many years before they have results adequate to untangle things.

Happy mushrooming!
