Inherently Evil Music
    #2852237 - 07/02/04 05:19 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

My main hobby is sound design and synthesis. I was checking out a new virtual instrument and was surprised to see this disclaimer on this web page:
Please don't use this program to make music that is against God and Jesus Christ (eg. HeavyMetal, NewAge,..etc..). Realize that the only way to the Salvation is Jesus Christ. Please don't lose this chance and don't make others to lose it!

WTF?! If I do lovely New Age swirling, pulsing ambient pads, then I am going to hell? Christ hates filter sweeps, soulful strings and haunting flutes?

Please pray for my immortal soul, cuz here goes another one... *Swami warms up synth and recorder and sparks a bowl*

when i think of evil music, I think of fascist metal bands like Slayer and Stormtroopers of Death.

but I like those bands

I guess evil music is OK in small doses. as long as its not your only perspective. the key is balance, I suppose

The only possible aspect of music that can possibly be evil is the words. I do not agree with lyrics (but would not censor) advocating violence or demeaming specific groups. Distortion, grunge, saturation and screeching feedback may not be everyone's ear candy, but is hardly satanic.

Note: the author of the website in question needs some serious deprogramming.

there's only a handful of truly evil bands, the likes of slayer and deicide.
which.. coincidentally.. thoroughly enjoy ripping christians apart in their lyrics..among other things. If christianity didn't exist.. I don't know what they would sing about. Thank god for the christians inspiring death metal with their dogmatic slinging. But aside from a few exceptions, generalizing 'heavy metal' or 'new age' 'etc' as against jesus or christ is recockulous.

I suggest we put the subject in a darkened room on mushrooms with Nevermore playing in loop.. that oughta do it.

De-construction

So... is the program very well designed? Have you used the frooty loops before?

Haven't checked it out yet. Can't use it as a plug-in.

Played with Fruity Loops and settled on Orion Platinum.

I wonder what instrument Jesus played?

Either way - Jesus the Christ, the critical foundation of the local high school marching band's brass section. No one could stir up those fans at the football games like Jesus could.

Many Christians do seem to prescribe rigid boundaries in all areas of life, even where those boundaries don't apply- like music. It would be interesting to see the demographic breakdown for what percentage of Christians follow various types of music. I'm betting that free form jazz ain't too popular with the Holy Rollers.

What I'm focused on is how the jesus freak is categorizing two WHOLE genre's of music as evil.

I know some music artists ARE evil, and have horrible intentions. How do I know? Because there are so many , and music is a VERY powerful tool to control and manipulate.

However, we are talking about individual artists, not genres of music?

Especially New age!?

Yea....like there is anything evil about a whole soundtrack of thunderstorm sounds

My dad threw out all my CD's when I was a teenager because they were "new age."

Then I bought another one and made him sit down and listen to the music without telling him it was new age, and he loved it. He was quite shocked when I informed him that yes, it was indeed new age music. :p

Evil bands don't exist, nor does evil music. That's just a phrase to make it sound much scarier, but nothing can be truely evil or good

However, I would say people like Burzum, Mayhem and Emperor and more "evil" than Slayer and Deicide, who, to my knowledge, hasn't even burned down their first church or killed their first person (n00bs.) The former has better music too

I think there exists something like evil music, and some metal bands come close to it.

I used to listen to Death Metal and Black Metal, hard stuff like the before mentioned Burzum, Mayhem and Emperor, and the bad vibes of their music really influenced me for a while, I really felt that they express some anger and evil intent  :mad2:. I listened to Cannibal Corpse, I read their lyrics in the net(it is a bit hard to get them just from listening  ), and I sometimes was disgusted by the lyrics content of mutilations, and the brutal distortions of the music itself.

I have to mentions, however, that there are some evil poseurs, like Slayer, or more recently Marilyn Manson, who are not really evil, but have this image with commercial goals. The psychos from Norway may also have mercantile interests, but when some of them kill people and burn churches their claims of evilness become more real , muahhaha

Doom Metal was also another past favorite, Skepticism is such a heavy band that even listening to it a bit may bring me in a slight depression  ,  the slow pulsating bass of their songs just drags me down.

In contrast, now  I try to live differently, and I listen mainly to electronic, ambient new age stuff. For example, Shpongle is more warm and friendly than Slayer, I guess that every independant observer who listens a bit to both without any preknowledge, will correctly classify which is more evil

But than again, everything is on one's head and experience is subjective, but the music itself also influences the experience and some emotions are more probable with some sorts of music.

from the p.o.v of the good christian, whom swami referred to at the start of this thread - yes. robert monroe's books are an enjoyable light read, i'm sure his $3000 weekend retreats are mucho fun too.

$5000 for what i'm sure is no more than a couple of frequency generators, about $40 worth of parts.......theres nothing magical in that box. imo its just a rip-off, mebbe ol bob himself is short on the readies and flogging it.

I don't really buy this war in heaven stuff. But if you follow the reasoning that the fallen wish to bring about the fall of civilization, they just have to keep lowering the standard.

So I would say that these talentless, corporate manufactured bands definitely are 'evil'.

Regarding evil bands, well yes i have to agree with some of you about Cannibal Corpse or Deicide. I really liked that music when i was 10 years younger but i really never was into that "Armies of darkness unite, destroy their churches and temples with fire, kill the christians" kind of lyrics.
Well, i had some more energy then, i guess i'll have to eat more candies and smoke less hash.
Btw, i recently went to a concert featuring Static X and Korn, first time i saw them alive but they really gave me some energy, could have been the booze though...

I heard Danny Carey of Tool deliberately summoned Anokian(sp?) demons through his drumset for the song 'Ticks & Leeches' on their last album. I guess he is into occult stuff like that.

Anyone know more about this or was that just a joke?

the FACT that the Power behind some of TOOL's music,

When I was in my early 20s, someone convinced me to throw out all my "evil" music. Tull, Clapton, Pink Floyd, etc. (70s stuff, mostly.)

I so regret having done that, now. Evil is in the mind of the beholder, or something like that. What might be evil and "sin" for one may not necessarily be evil and sin for another. I can listen to an album containing lyrics that are evil, but I'm not going to act on it. To me, it's art, even if a form of evil art, in the lyrics themselves.

Would Jesus listen to bands that Fundamentalist Christians claim are evil, if he was here?
