horse poop age
    #2851850 - 07/02/04 05:04 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

My friend has an unlimited supply of horse poop. She went and shoveled some today but was confused about what part of the pile to dig from.

THe pile is about 8-9 ft tall and the owner of the pile told her that the bottom of the pile is about 2 years old. The shit at the bottom is black and earthy, it doesn't have a smell except dirt. It is very compacted and dense. THe stuff near the middle is kind of like the stuff at the bottom but looser smellier and lighter. THe stuff at the top doesn't smell really at all and is still in nuggets. The nuggets look like they are made almost completly of hay.

What type should she use? She shovelled a mix, mostly of the bottom blacker stuff with some top and middle.

Does anyone have experience with this? WHat part of the pile you you use?

You want the drier stuff(and then bring it to the target moisture yourself).

What would you consider to be the drier stuff? Is the bottom stuff any good for mushrooms?

I would assume that by dry you mean the less composted stuff made mostly of hay near the top?

I think any of it would work.
