the overlay was surprisingly dense, came off the sub easily, looks icky, and smells amazing. the sides were thin fluff and not the same type of dense growth like the top

What in the fuck. That is amazing.

Forbidden marshmallows indeed.

How long has it been since you spawned those?  The first one looks really good, so I'd be hopeful about that one.  The others don't look quite as good, but not bad.

Are yours staying pretty wet, as in lots of beads of water on the myc, without having to mist it?  My uglier tub was like that for a while, and after I opened up some more FAE and those beads started to evaporate, it started pinning.  If yours are similar, try upping FAE a bit.

Those were about 1.5 months. I had the lid flipped and staggered. Those tubs have been tossed. Just pics of what my nat tubs usually look like.

overlay followup

257g wet dried to 13g so pretty shit bio efficiency. made tea (2 pulls, 16oz ea) and took it to a halloween party. everyone had a great time. i had maybe 6oz (2oz 1st pull, ~4oz 2nd pull) of tea over the night. it was weaker than expected, but really really nice. low body load, low visuals, great euphoria. the good vibes are lasting well past the peak

here's to some fat nat canopy's in our futures, love you all

So, reading through the thread (or skimming rather) it seems that you cant really do anything about overlay with Nats, your best option to induce fruiting bodies is to cut off the overlay, scrape the cake with a fork, then dunk and cross your fingers for fruits?

Is that about right?

There's a lot of this thread that I haven't read yet.  People will say you just need to find a culture that doesn't overlay.  I know people have ripped off the overlay before, but I've never really found out if that works, or if it's just the act of a desperate man.

NotFromGeorgia forked this one, but I think most people use their fingers to just pull it off.  Also I don't know if rehydrating is necessary, but if it feels lighter like it lost a lot of water then it may need it.

Hey folks. Just running things by those that are active on this thread. I am going to change the title to The Official Psilocybe natalensis thread. We feel like this would be a better fit, as the original title is more of a question that as far as we understand has been answered, and the thread has become an awesome source of information on the cultivating of nats, so a better title would be an asset for folks searching for information and participating.
If anyone has anything to share about the title change, or if I’m missing something just reach out.
Keep up all the good work y’all, you are awesome.
Trout

Found these in my compost pile. All dried out and actually bigger than what grew in my Martha tent.  Anyone care to comment on potency or other?

I don't know how comfortable I'd be eating compost shrooms, but maybe that's just me.

I'm sure they're just as potent as they are when you grow them inside.

I searched, and didn't see anything about this in the thread. I came across this chem profile in reddit that confirmed that Nats have a high content of aeruginascin in them, as speculated way early in this thread by several, including @a.k.a.

it works, just not well. and that's an accurate assessment of my desperation
i was hoping the overlay would be strong enough to not worry about fruits, but alas and alack it is not

now i'm curious about that myceliated grain potency thread. would be cool to get some nat spawn thrown into the testing

From what I remember we’re pretty much working with the same gene pool it these… is that correct? Or have there been other land races added to the collection? Have people been able to consistently isolate phenotypes through mating? Haven’t been following consistently, and just want to keep up to date. The wheels of my life are revolving back into myco mode.

Thank you! These are the fourth and fifth tubs I’ve tried; the first was an utter failure (sub too wet, iffy spawn), numbers two and three gave me fruit but didn’t have quite the pinset of these. I upped the spawn/sub ratio to 1:4 for these tubs after using 1:3 for the earlier ones. I think the additional water available at 1:4 is helpful.

As long as you are 100% on your Id I wouldn't worry about compost shrooms
