selecting for vigorous growth on agar
    #2851249 - 07/02/04 02:33 PM (13 years, 26 days ago)

My friend is curious about using the best tissue for grain inoculation.

She is using SDA plates and culturing eq. She has seen pictures of rhizomorphic mycelium and of the fluffy, less desirable kind.

THe thing is: in her experience she has never seen the ropey type as displayed in photos. Are there any techniques for stimulating rhiz?

When she decides to inoculate using the plates, what should she look for while choosing the best tissue?

if your doing multispore to agar you never know wether or not you'll get rhizomorphic growth, although some strain are nutorius for good rhizomorphic growth you will for sure better luck with a strain like that.i had rhizo and fluffy on the same plate with an isolated strain.

as for stimulating rhizomophic growth it's all in the genetics of the substrains that germinate.

you can do a multispore to agar then isolate the most aggressive mycelium to another plate, and use that for g2g transfer.
