US – Fight a Vapor Tax (HR 5715/S 2929)
HR 5715 and S 2929 propose raising taxes on all tobacco products to a rate equal to the tax applied to cigarettes and, at the same time, doubles the tax on cigarettes. On a milligram to milligram basis, cigarettes would see an advantage over e-cigarettes as they would be almost five times cheaper than nicotine from safer sources.
If HR 5715/S 2929 is enacted, consumers will be paying 5c to 6c per milligram of nicotine compared to 1.1c/mg in cigarettes (based on the average nicotine content of 9mg/cigarette across multiple brands)(NIH). The tax hike is just as bad, if not worse, for nicotine pouches, snus, and moist snuff (dip), which are all reduced risk products compared to cigarettes.
According to the FDA, serious tobacco scientists, the UK’s Royal College of Physicians, and several other international government health agencies, tobacco products exist on a “continuum of risk.” These groups are also aware that nicotine is not the source of harm. While CASAA members and other nicotine consumers are experiencing a reduction of harm by moving down the risk continuum with products like e-cigarettes, snus, and nicotine pouches, sponsors of HR 5715/S 2929 are displaying willful ignorance about the tobacco risk continuum.

The link above leads to the article, links to the bills in question, and a simple text box that you can fill out for your district which will send an e-mail to your representative(s). ______________________
This is getting ridiculous! Just another obvious tax grab and a way to keep people smoking tobacco instead of using safer alternatives.
This would DOUBLE the tax on ALL nicotine products and tobacco! Please take a minute to write in and be heard by your representatives (and save your hard earned dollars)
Even if you don't use these products, does the government really need to stick it to us on taxes even more than they already do?

I can appreciate someone wanting to grow their own tobacco, but in the same breath, the government should not be taxing people to hell and back just to line their already overly fattened pockets
In my circumstance this is about vaping products which were the only thing that helped me finally quit smoking tobacco. There are healthier alternatives, other parts of the world recognize this fact, but here in the United States our government is blatantly ignoring scientific facts Why should we let them profit even more from that?

I get it. You probably feel targeted.
The taxes on mj inspire me to produce it myself. Prohibition on drugs and we find ways to do it anyway. You don't think you could make some sort of nicotine liquid though? Some of the people around here seem to be chemists. I don't know much about it I guess.

It's not just about me, it's about the community of people that enjoy nicotine. We used to have a wonderful group of people here in town that owned & operated vape shops, but the government has put them out of business. I do not think that is right, so I'm speaking out & trying to spread the word for all of us.
Not everyone is able to grow tobacco or synthesize their own nicotine. These populations deserve access to nicotine whether that be from tobacco or other nicotine products.
Just trying to spread the word in order to help people (yes, including myself) have safe & affordable access to harm reduction products + services.

I quit vaping 2 years ago and I just dumped my bottle of nicotine last week - I think it was 24mg/ml and a 500mL bottle- I can't imagine paying $600 freaking dollars in tax on that. These laws seem to be going for vapes and specifically DIY vapers and vape stores to push people towards smoking or buying big brand vapes they sell at gas stations. I quit vaping because of the vape mail ban being so draconian and refusing to pay $20 per package delivery fee or having to shop in stores again.
Vaping was great, made it easy for me to quit smoking, and doing it DIY made it easy to cut down nicotine bit by bit to the point I wasn't addicted anymore. Even just how I felt switching from smoking to vaping was pretty astounding - anecdotally there is a huge health difference there. I feel bad vaping has been shat on and demonized so much. This is just another step in the long line of illogical legislation that will ultimately result in worse health outcomes by turning people back to more damaging forms of nicotine consumption.
