This is the place for everyone who enjoys anime. We can enjoy ridiculous anime jokes, and memes. We can suggest really good shows and movies.
So sit back, relax. Welcome to Shroomnami.

There are different types of anime. Approach this knowing that some people don’t watch certain types. So identify which type you are discussing right at the beginning. I would say, the main classification of animes are as follows. Violent Existential Harem/pervy Nonsensical fun School Drama or “slice of life”
I also feel like they should be rated on three scales.
Art style Stories, content/deeper meanings Characters
It is possible for an anime to be excellent with just two of those categories. But I can’t do it without at least two. And only the best ones have all three.
Feel free to share what you like and don’t like. But this is not a place to hate on anyone. All art is precious. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean other people don’t.
Also, let’s be respectful of people that haven’t seen these yet. Try to keep spoilers to a minimum.

I will start out. This is a violent existential anime. My favorite anime is Neon Genesis Evangellion. I feel like it deals with some very heavy subject matter for an anime. It deals with religious allegory, and the implications of what it is to truly desire something. This is all framed with giant robots, killing monsters. Truly incredible. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t given it a chance yet.
I would say
story. 5 out of 5
Art 5 out of 5
Characters 5 out of a 5
Bold claims I’m sure. But with such a deeply allegorical story. With such a magnificent art style. And with such flawed, human, beautifully tragic characters. How can I not love this magnificent art?

FLCL.
This anime is pervy/existential It’s every little boys fantasy. Having someone tell you that you’re special. That you matter. That they need your help. Especially when it’s a beautiful woman. We get to watch this kid try his hardest to live a normal life. While amazing mechanical monsters are exploding out of his forehead. There’s a lot of different styles utilized in this anime. Which makes for an unpredictable visual feast.
This show talks about loneliness. It’s about growing up. There’s a ton of gags in this show that are always going to make me laugh. Chaotic, tragic, beautiful.
This will give you a lot of questions. It won’t give you as many answers. But it’s always a delight. With an absolutely killer soundtrack by The Pillows to boot. Truthfully, I think the show was flawless.
Don’t watch the second season. It was not made by the same people. I don’t think they understood what this show meant to us.

It is a crime they didn't just resume the original series. Like what kind of fucked up shit is that to make an amazing story then just fucking leave it unfinished....and then they hand the show to a new young team that doesn't know FUCKING SHIT about the soul of old animes....I feel so robbed...

It always comes up for a reason. The next anime I’d like to discuss is cowboy bebop.
This falls under a couple different umbrellas. But I’d say mostly it exists as a violent, existential anime. This deals with some philosophical concepts, such as what it is to be a man. The legacy. Finding meaning in benign activities. Being able to forgive. This strikes the perfect balance between sci-fi and cowboy. The characters are all delightful. They all have their own quirks and come off as incredibly charming. The stories while mostly unrelated. All do have an underlying plot. That is being carried forward the entire time that you’re having a great time. Here’s when the crew accidentally took too many shrooms.

A few of my favorites;
Vinland Saga - Great anime, Vikings and shit.
Made in Abyss - Worth a watch if you can handle it.
Hunter x Hunter - Give it a chance, you'll probably really like it and then get depressed when you realize it's never going to get finished...

The next anime, I’d like to discuss. Is a lesser known gem. Existential. It’s called serial experiments lain. A new type of drug has hit the streets. It’s a tiny machine….
“It’s this.” (Fits in the palm of your hand.) This one deals with isolation, loneliness, and sacrifice. Your left wondering what is and is not real as the lines get blurred over the course of the show. The finale was just breathtaking.
Story five out of five Characters Four out of five because if I’m being serious, somebody who’s really depressed as a main character makes for a kind of boring character. Despite their activities. Art style Five out of five There’s some really interesting techno EyeCandy in this.
Leaves you wanting more. But follows the classic 13 and done style. That leaves you breathless.

Trigun The ultimate Syfy cowboy Vash the stampede.
Existential, nonsensical, violent. In that order. Because the main character is actually a pacifist. Don’t let that fool you. He’s the most wanted man in the entire galaxy. Every bounty hunter in the universe is literally gunning for that money. He doesn’t let it bother him though. With the heart of a child and the skills of an assassin, he treds the road of redemption.

Disclaimer! This one has very high levels of violence. Not for everyone!
Claymore. Violent & existential This one deals with mental illness, the expectations of a woman, abuse, and overcoming anything. This is an unflinching caricature of what men can do to women. It is visceral and heart breaking. But so incredibly captivating to watch. Some really amazing creature designs are in the show. You also get to watch a really touching story of somebody caring for someone who’s been considered valueless. The incredibly powerful charcter development. Shows sacrifice, determination, and love.

Characters five out of five Art style Five out of five Story Four out of five
The only reason I didn’t give a higher score on story, is because I don’t think It can finish. It doesn’t make it any less incredible. If you like the concept behind a lot of mythological creatures or demons. You’ll find this to be a very entertaining story. Truly beautiful experience, probably will make you cry.

Paranoia agent.
This anime deals with its namesake, paranoia. This show was very good at leading you in one way while actually giving hints to take you in another. The more we learn the more difficult it becomes to understand the events.
I think of it like a detective novel. You’re trying to investigate all of the characters to find out what’s going on. Which makes it quite difficult.

Not in terms of anime, in terms of every show I have ever seen. This counts movies and tv, all of it.
It is not available in its complete form except for various sites that I will not provide a public link for, but it is out there.

All incarnations of it have the Major quoting actual Buddhist scripture. She is among my favorite characters of all time, largely because of the scripture stuff and the story of her is so good.
I've watched and rewatched every version of it out there. It can make you think about things and has profound themes throughout.

Do you guys remember how this movie used to be forbidden? It was whispered in circles, discussing really incredible animation. But as a kid, it was really hard for me to get because you got to see nudity! One of the coolest, strongest female characters ever! An absolute tactical beast. For me… That anime was love at first sight.
The discussion of what a soul actually is. Was incredibly profound. The stories were unrelated. And yet they were all related. By the detachment of the body from the mind. In a real sense. The entire show is about meditation.

Was it? I never knew.
For me the forbidden stuff was like Violence Jack.
When I met my spouse in the mid to late 90s they had a VHS copy of Ghost in the Shell. It was one of the few anime shows at the time that was as good as Akira.
I am a huge fan of anything by Gen Urobuchi and Leiji Matsumoto. Too many to list, but Gun Frontier is the funniest series in Matsumoto's universe. It is also pretty grim. It is another Space Pirate Herlock show.

Oh absolutely it was. My parents looked it up because they knew I was super into anime. And then they saw her running down an alleyway. With no pants on. And they despise that concept. So they didn’t want me to watch that. Because they sucked.
He had this one friend who is dope. He is into some anime. He knew about hentai. He made sure to get me that movie because he knew how much I wanted it.😂 Super cool dude.

This is a show about a traveling spiritualist. He’s able to see things and perceive the world of the spirits. This is a series of short stories. All about the unique and interesting things he encounters on his journey. Some of them benevolent. Some of them aggressive. Some of them benign. Each of these stories is almost a mystery. You’re trying to figure out what is going to happen. How can he help? Sometimes he can’t.
It’s a beautifully well shot show. It’s incredibly peaceful. And it gives you a lot to think about. Plays with the concept of the river of souls. Kind of something discussed in Final Fantasy 10 as the Mako river. It’s a lot more deep and spiritual than almost any anime out right now. It is something to come back and watch again. Because it is quite lovely. Even if you know how it’s gonna go, it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment.

I use a 10 point rating system for everything and it might contrast too much with a 5 point, so I will just mention shows I like and leave the reviews to others.
That Time I Got Reincarnate As A Slime and Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense are really fun IMHO.
The Rising of the Shield Hero and No Guns Life And Future Diary, how could I forget that! I love these as well.
And speaking of forbidden anime, there are genres of anime where girls fight with heavy fan service added, Queensblade probably take the cake for that, but there are many of them, another very popular one is Ikki Tousen.
I actually can't even remember the names of most of the anime I have seen, even some I liked a lot.
I forget that Hentai exists. Bible Black is a messed up show halfway between anime and Hentai.

This is existential. We are left to wander the tattered remains of what was once an incredible world. Vaguely similar to the MegaMan universe. But we’re post apocalypse. Rust, mortality itself. Has been ravaging the land. Bringing Death to the immortal race of robots that has ruled this world for hundreds of years.
Casshern is the person who is most at fault for what has happened. He is unapologetic. But he has nothing but empathy for the people that he finds destroyed along his path. This is a road of redemption.
By the end you will be floored. By the concept that beauty itself, only exists because of its impermanence. Like a fleeting flower that only opens once, and then wilts. It’s perfection, never to be seen again…

some real trippy art in this one

Steins;Gate This one has the literal best time travel story in any show, movie etc.
Both of these not recommended to get mega high on dissociatives and start thinking you are in these stories. I did this and it is a trip.

Incredible art style captivating characters. All delivered around the prosecution of an innocent. Who turns into an incredible medicine woman.
Lots of psychedelics were definitely used. There’s a lot of sexual imagery in this. But it delivers a powerful story. True eye candy.

i was really impressed with HBO's scavenger's reign. the art direction is flawless. it's like if you combined a studio ghibli movie with a moebius comic. the story is tight and keeps you hooked. the characters are all interesting. and the setting feels fresh. it's true science fiction. highly recommended.

Zero out of infinity. That is my rating. The more I think about it, the worse it becomes. They also committed one of my cardinal sins of entertainment. Showing me an image that is never followed up on at all…

If you don’t mind spoilers. The actual very angry review is in my journal. I don’t suggest anyone read it. Because no one should waste any time on this show ever.
Obviously, based off of my words. You know how I feel about this. Please don’t try to tell me any redeeming qualities about this show. I waited for 10 years to finish watching this… I don’t wanna ever hear about it again.
Strong disagree. Divisive ending, but fitting. This quote is highly relevant. “Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” They also fixed a line from the end of the manga that kind of excused everything and was terribad.

I have rarely been as mad about wasting hours of my life as I was when I read the ending to Tokyo Ghoul. I read that shit every week for like 5 fucking years and they did the fandom like that

This anime is about a mild mannered student. Who discovers a notebook that allows him to kill anyone whose name is written in it. He can even specify how they die and when. This power is actually stolen from a demon. Who becomes a very silly character. Completely detached from humanity. This demon is trying to make a deal. He’s making money. Life is the currency of the afterlife.
It’s amazing how absolute power always manages to corrupt absolutely. This kid becomes a god of death. All while evading capture and developing a more distorted view of himself. He is willing to do anything that it takes to keep this power. Because he feels justified. How could he be a bad person? If all he’s doing is killing bad people. This gains him allies to his cause.
The people trying to stop him must in fact, be bad people in his mind. This power struggle between good and evil. Brings you incredible highs. And devastating lows. I love a good detective story. But you’ll find yourself rooting for the killer. At least I was. The ending is something that I felt like we all needed by the time we got it. The deed was done. The world changed forever. Whether it was for the better, or for the worst. Would be up to opinion.

Good list, lots of "classics"
Samurai Champloo for many reasons, not least Nujabes doing his thing.

Spy x Family Review This is irrelevant, slice of life anime. There is also a surprising amount of violence that can happen.
Having a healthy happy family. While also being a spy. While your wife is secretly an assassin. While you’re adopted daughter is secretly able to read your thoughts. Makes for funny & feel good entertainment. Three people that have had nothing to trust in their entire lives. Getting to experience love for the first time. It’s deeply touching. It reminds you of what you are thankful for. It’s also really funny. Good humor and physical comedy do make appearances. They got some pretty silly characters. But it has’nt annoyed me. The core of the show is the question. What makes a happy family? It’s love. It doesn’t matter what you do or who you were. It’s about what you bring home.

Pervy/nonsensical This takes you across the universe. It brings these incredibly powerful space pirates into a Japanese bathhouse. This poor guy Tenchi. Is trying to learn to be a priest from his grandfather. A master swordsman. Suddenly a princess shows up with her little sister. Then tells him he’s of royal blood and he’s already engaged to her.
He is not pleased with that at all. Then a pirate shows up and tells him he should run away with her into space.
He doesn’t want that either. Then cops show up. One is incredibly competent and the other is a total ditz.
Somehow he just feeds them and they never leave. Luckily they turned out to be cool. Eventually a scientist shows up who is responsible for making bioorganic space weaponry. She just sets up in a secret room somewhere.
In a very real sense this show defined what a Haram anime is. It’s hilarious. It’s nonsensical. And it is a bit pervy. This regular dude. Is just harried by these women with literal magic powers and incredible technology. He even tells them. That he isn’t interested. But that makes him seem more interesting to all of them somehow. It actually turns out that he does have special powers because of his lineage. He ends up using these to combat actual forces of evil, spirits & aliens.
All of this is done through a hilarious series of silly events. This uses actual principles of Taoism, Japanese folklore and mythology mixed together. This is all done through an ancient Japanese space fairing race.
Which is unique and very interesting. Honestly, it’s a fabulous show. I would recommend it to anyone. But there are many iterations of it. I like the original best. Characters five out of five Style five out of five Story six out of five. Because this managed to be a really good story. Especially considering it’s a harem anime.

Really pretty intro music.
This is a really sharp animation style. Very eye-catching. It deals with the eerie beauty of being lost in an alien wilderness.
As gorgeous as your surroundings may be. It still wants to kill you. While humans fight for survival on an alien world. You encounter fantastic Flora & Fana like you’ve never see. This makes you thankful for what you have. It insights wonderful concepts and ideas. Creative creature and plant designs. There’s a sense of wonder. As you never really know what’s around the next corner.

A triumph of animation and style.
This is a provocative spy thriller, Set in the far off future. We get to watch Eon carry out a series of missions. The stories can be hard to follow. But they are incredibly powerful. They deal with contentious subject matter. Like fascism, war, and scientific endeavors without any checks and balances. The pursuit of happiness and freedom at any cost. She is a beautiful disaster. As provocative as she is dangerous.
The nemesis between her and freedom. Is Trevor Goodchild, the leader of a fascist state. He’s hilarious as well as incredibly captivating. But deeply frustrating. He has no trust left in humanity. Thus he feels the need to control humanity and prevent it from destroying itself. At least that’s what he thinks he’s doing. Part of you just wants them to hook up. Part of you just wants them to kill each other.
Under different circumstances. They would’ve been lovers. But she wants absolute freedom. He wants to maintain the status quo. With incredibly interesting plots and fantastic technologies that I honestly hope we don’t obtain anytime soon. It’s a titillating feast both visually and creatively.
“ I thought you had an operation here. I thought you were getting some work done. Where is the smoke filled room? Where are the sleazy characters? Where are the window dressers?”

Odd Taxi was excellent. Feel like a lot of people haven't heard of that one.

I've really been enjoying Helck, the Faraway Paladin and Shangri-La Frontier lately.
The Faraway Paladin is especially fun. It's like D&D anime, there aren't nearly enough of those IMO.
Though it is basically a Gacha Life looking anime, I enjoyed: I Shall Survive Using Potions.
Ever seen Le Chevalier D'Eon? French Zombie conspiracy anime. Good stuff.

Two animes you all need to watch made by the same dude.
Ill post pictures and stuff tomorrow but the first one is.
Akagi.
Akagi is fucking awesome. Its about the world of high stakes Yakuza Mahjongg and this dude who is just a complete demon and destroys everyone at Mahjong. The only thing that sucks about this anime is the ending because they didnt finish it correctly. You have one of the biggest lead ups of all time but then it just ends. Like its worse than how the sopranos ended.
Kaiji.
The other one is called Kaiji. This is also about the world of high stakes Yakuza Gambling but this one follow the life of a loser degenerate neet gambler who always gets in over his head and keeps getting in worse and worse shit.
This anime is a ride. They both are but they are worth a watch and you probably havnt ever watched anything like these two animes before unless you watched them. They are truly unique and fucking awesome.
Kaiji is 10/10.
Akagi would be 11/10 but it just abruptly ends at the apex of the build up of the final act and we dont see what happens. I think they ended it correctly in the manga but ran out of money or something for the anime. Its still fucking amazing though. Akagi would be in my top 5 animes.
