I've got my initial 2 test jars about to hit 100%, planning on giving them a good few days consolidation time so maybe they'll be ready to spawn by the weekend or early next week. Other jars just got a shake the other day and look to be recovering.

May I ask, what is the recommended way to store these genetics long term? Are master slants the way to go or are there other easier or more reliable ways to store that I am not aware of? I got all the supplies for making slants a while back but never got around to making any and it seems this might be a good time to figure it out if that is indeed the preferred method.

Does anyone have any semperviva prints they would be interested in sharing. I am absolutely in love with what I’ve heard about this species?

Would love to trade some San Pedro pups

DM me if interested.

Will also put up a trade on the marketplace but figured I’d ask around here first.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of phenotype diversity might emerge as this species gets more popular. I’m already seeing differences just from the pics in this thread, some with upturn caps some without, some with thin spaghetti stems other with thicker straight ones, some lighter colors some more reddish, but yea I guess a lot of it might just be a function of the environment.

Quick question for those of you that pasteurize their substrate. Can I prep and pasteurize in advance and leave in the sealed plastic bags till needed or should I wait till the day before I'm ready to use?

You can, but I wouldn't pasteurise more than a week prior to use

I usually pasteurise batches in advance and they sit in my room for anything up to about 2 months and they’ve been fine. I pasteurise in ziplocks and double bag. As long as you don’t open them they should be okay for a good while.

YMMV of course!

I can already see I'm going to need to invest in a sous vide machine. Packing up just 1 brick of coir into baggies has 2 dehydrators going.

This is just my experience with a manure based compost. Not too sure on straight HP.

Yeah I use a sous vide, they’re great!

Fill jars and use your pc to pasteurize them.

Why are you running your coir through the dehydrator?
That stuff works without heat treating it

I prefer to use my oven personally. Never even thought about sous vide... that might get me to finally buy one

Was told that Semps are very prone to contamination and that most growers pasteurize both Substrate and Casing, so that's how I'm starting.

I wouldn't say so. but then again, i am new to semperviva aswell. once colonized they seem rather resilient to me.

I wouldn’t say prone to contamination, but since they are slow to mature the potential for problems to show themselves is greater.

Right, when I first learned about them, they were nicknamed semperviva because they were so contam tolerant and long lived. That said, I do prep all of my coir with boiled water in a phucket bucket.

Like DERRAYLD said, I jar my casing up to pasteurize with flipped lids. Then run it through a long "Keep Warm" cycle in the Instant Pot. Lasts for many months. Never had a casing contam out on me... yet. <knocks wood>

I don't even mind if if dries out a bit because it is easier to make a nice light casing that I then mist heavily.
