White/Red Millet - Dehydrated Mycelium?
    #2850548 - 07/02/04 08:33 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Hello,

I am currently having problems with my white/red millet combo in Qt. jars. I made 8 jars with germation and growth in 6. It germinated really fast, 2days, but the growth on jars has stalled for a couple of days now.

I think my problem is that the jars aren't wet enough. The millet looks really dry, and all the points of growth seem to be where I inoculated.

The millet looks like it did before i soaked it and PC'ed it, how it came from the store.

I tipped the jars to see if the growth had gone into the jar, and it hadn't. The growth has only been on the outer side where the water/spore from the syringe went.

The mycelium itself appears really whispy looking, not a really deep white growth, and i am sure it is mycelium.

My solution to this is to sterilize some water, and slowy add a little water where the mycelium has grown and check for growth.

Does this seem like a logical and viable way to fix the problem?
Do I even have a problem?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did you simmer the grain or did you add the water to the jars before pc'ing?

I always simmer for 30 minutes prior to pc'ing and my water content is perfect everytime.

My jars colonise in less than 10 days.

i have better luck soaking for 24 hours
then simmering
but every time i have grain problems i can assume it is water content
it can be tricky until you get it good and down

Quote:

ANNO Tested the simmering--I decided to test a rye grain for the water absorbing ability.

I weigted out 3 time 100 gram rye grain.

Experiments:
1. 100 g rye were dried in the oven at 140?C for 90 minutes
2. 100 g rye were simmered in 500 ml of water for 30 minutes (rye grain put in boiling water)
3. 100 g rye were simmered in 500 ml of water for 40 minutes (rye grain put in boiling water)

Results:
1. The 100 g rye grain in the oven dried to 88 g -> 12% moisture content.
2. After 20 minutes of draining the grain weighted 190 g, nearly no exploded kernels ->(12g+90g)/190g = 54% moisture content
3. After 20 minutes of draining the grain weighted 200 g, more exploded kernels, I?d say at the limit ->(12g+100g)/200g = 56% moisture content

Conclusion:
Preparing grain by simmering it is a viable option. It shows that the amounts usually used when one mixes grain and water directly (100g grain and 100g-110g water) are similar(a little higher) as if one simmers the grain for around 40 minutes.

Here is what I do VVV

Soak over night
rinse
simmer for 30 minutes
rinse
load jars
pc for 90 minutes at 15 psi

I have had 100% success this way-no guessing about the water content because the grain can only absorb so much--its perfect everytime.

No I didn't simmer the grain. I soaked them for about 12-14 hours, strained, and then PC'ed.

So to simmer, all you do is boil the grain in a pot for 30 minutes.

I really do think the water content is off, Do you advice adding just a couple cc's to get stuff going.

There is your problem. You should have added the water or simmered to the above. You didn't give it the right ratio of water.

As for adding water now,I assume you can, being completely sterile, but,in my opinion,I would give up a couple of bucks of grain and start afresh.

Thats just my two pennies
