Sure. One of the worst sounds is plastic veggie bags from the store. The sound and texture of them bother me the most out of any sound (except styrofoam rubbing together). Even describing these sounds makes me cringe.

(Chuckles) OK I have something for you. Are you familiar with Pavlov’s dogs? So have your favorite sweet hard candy in your pocket. You can never eat it again. Unless you’re experiencing one of those sounds. Then you can put one into your mouth.
Do this every time. It’ll take a long time for this to settle in. But…
Eventually, the negative stimuli as unpleasant as it is. Will trigger a sensation in your brain that it’s about to be rewarded. Thus you will no longer experience an unpleasant experience. Instead, a craving for your favorite candy.
Try that for at least two weeks and let me know if it works.

Yeah. So if i pair a horrible sound with a pleasant sound (such as a musical note), i can associate the horrible sound with an enjoyable stimulus. Genius!
I need to buy a sound machine, like those fart machines, but for adults.

Same exact principal. I only chose hard candy because you aren’t able to wear headphones at all times. You can usually have a piece of candy as an emergency in your pocket.

If i get gum, i can have both a pleasant taste/sensation plus the chewing sounds could help mask any pleasant sounds. I'll just have to remember to bring gum to certain public places.

This is a less common sound reflex than finger nails on a chalk board, but is likely linked to trauma in your toddler years. combining the sound with another is a superficial desensitization.
To get to the root of it requires regression and reaquaintance with the trauma, and subsequent desensitization in a calm environment.
there is a short cut to it in which you get calm and stay calm and listen to the sound for a few minutes each day for a week - in this case you do not address the trauma or even discover it but you disentangle from the reflex response.

I do agree with RGV, it probably goes back to some old memory. Where you tried to crawl over to somebody right as they tried to get a bag ready to go into a garbage can. Something jarring & loud. If you do find out what the original trauma associated with the sound was. That would, most likely make it go away. Example: Something similar happened to someone on a YouTube channel called psyched substance. He was having a wonderful time. Until he heard a siren during his trip. Which caused it to spiral out of control in a very negative fashion.
It wasn’t until much later. That he was re-analyzing the audio to figure out what caused the trigger. That he realized it was actually just the siren. Because when he was four years old, he was in a car accident that almost killed him. Once he realized that connection. He was able to de-program the sirens association. And the next time it happens during a trip. It was not a negative experience.
This is the video. You might find it incredibly educational. If you’re looking for the experience being described specifically. I believe that starts at hour 3.

I mean, I guess it could be tied to childhood trauma. I am sensitive to other things as well, so I think Im just easily overstimulated by certain stimuli.
For example, flashing cop lights at night is so blinding, that when Im driving, it causes me to almost lose control even with my hand blocking the nauseating, pulsing, strobing red and blue lights. Perhaps I was involved in a high-speed chase as a baby

Completely possible. Maybe somebody got into a fight with one of your parents outside of a car. And then cops had to show up. Anything really.
The point is figuring out how to deal with the stimuli. I think my advice stands. But if you can find the root of what caused it, that’s even better.
Personally, that really dry cardboard paper being rubbed together sound, really bothers me. Now for that one, I think it’s associated with a job I used to have. Because it made my hands incredibly dry. And the paper we used made them even more dry. So I ended up just associating that sound with the sensation of having cracked dry hands. To this day I still don’t like it. 😂

The sound of the bags ripping off the roll, or as you rub them to open them?
For me, the undulating oscillating noise of a leaf blower catalyzes a cascade of disturbing fury. My father, my brother, and my son are also hypersensitive to certain sounds. The women in the family not. My dad used to get quite angry about the sound of the dishwasher running.

I know what you’re describing. It is something that I suffer from. That’s from living in the city for too long.
Some people just need solitude. When they don’t have it, they get pretty cranky about the noise that they can control. Then lash out at it to try and make it as quiet as they possibly can. This can pour over and make a lot of sounds really frustrating for these people. Because there are sounds that are very repetitive. Will go for a long time. Plus you don’t have any control over when it turns off.
Such as a siren. Or people changing plastic bags next to you when you’re a child, it’s anger. But I think everyone deserves to have some solitude every now and then. If you took a vacation, it might elevate some of this. It’s almost as if you have a certain amount of solitude that you need. Because once you’re out in the wilderness, and you actually have it for a while. It won’t take long before you don’t want anymore. Then when you come back to the city, it won’t seem so bad at all.

Its the opening of the plastic bags, especially with wet hands. The high-pitched squeaky/scratchy sound drives me nuts!
Thats interesting about your family. Perhaps its a mostly-male thing

Yes, that is correct. How very astute. Men feel more need for control. Thus they tend to suffer from this more in my opinion. Or to quote Psy. “ I learned it from my daddy”
This is deeply relevant to every son. 🤣 This video is about the legacy & true love of a father.

I like that idea.
Do you find some thing triggers the symptoms. Or is it a persistent constant thing.
