Any way to reduce CO2 levels in my WHOLE apartment?
    #28503914 - 10/14/23 12:49 AM (3 months, 13 days ago)

My Inkbird CO2 controller just came in and after the fan was running all night, the CO2 never dropped below 980.

I decided to take it out of the tent, which is in my apartment and they still didn't drop, so I thought the sensor wasn't working.

Then I aired out the apt and they dropped to 500...

The AC is always on but it looks like it just isn't enough.

My apt is around 600sqf and it's just me and my boston terrier so I never imagined that we could be producing that much CO2, especially while the AC was constantly on 24/7.

Is there any way to fix that without constantly airing it out? When winter comes it will be way too cold to air it out that much, which will create the temperature issue for the mushrooms.

I thought about getting more plants but I don't know if that would make any difference unless I make it look like a jungle in here.

Any ideas?

You don't mention mushroom species, so I'll assume P. cubensis. I don't use a Martha, technically cubes don't need one, so I'm not concerned about CO2.

Stamets in TMC, page 157, calls for CO2 less than 5000 ppm during primordia formation and cropping. Other species will require less.

Ventilation lowers CO2, so in the Martha just having a fan. Otherwise to lower apartment CO2, crack open a window.

Are you having an issue with your mushrooms that you think are CO2 related?

Those CO2 levels sound perfectly normal for indoor living conditions. Up to 1000 PPM is fine for health.

Indoor CO2 levels between 500 and  1100 are pretty normal. Global CO2 levels are at 420. If you live in an area with high traffic or industrial activity expect levels higher than 420.

If you want lower levels open a window. I don't know how much would plants help,  but at night, when there's no photosynthesis, they will further increase CO2. If this is related to mushrooms, plants nearby could potentially bring other issues (gnats will find a welcoming environment).

If there's an issue that you think is being caused by CO2 maybe there are other potential solutions.

CO2 scrubbing is routinely used in submarines and space ships but it would be expensive.

In order for the plants to filter enough CO2 that would make a difference, 1/3 of my apartment has to look like a rain forest. Thick, dense canopy, which for most normal people isn't doable.

Also, plants produce CO2 at night, with the exception of some species.

I am growing only Lion's Mane at the moment and I am aiming for CO2 levels to be around 500-600.

Cracking a window isn't enough, as I had to have two separate doors on each side of the apartment open for air circulation.

After I would close the doors, the CO2 levels would spike again to 800+ within 30 minutes.

I would air it out more often but winter is coming and that will create some rough living conditions for me. It get's well below freezing here.

My mushrooms are coraling, that's the only issue that I'm having.

I'm not worried about the living conditions for myself necessarily.

Do you have a separate room you’re growing in and can keep the door closed? If so get a fan and put it in that window and a space heater. But your electric bill is going to go through the roof

directly pull your air for your tent from outside and keep the fan on low and constant and see what happens.

CO2 500 - 1200 ppm would be ideal for fruiting Lion's Mane. More attention paid to proper temperature and humidity would be more helpful.

If you'd like, I can move this to Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms where you're likely to get better advice. Mush Cult is for psychoactive mushroom cultivation discussion.

My FC is in the living room/kitchen because that's the only place where I have an exhaust hookup..

Unfortunately there is no separate room that I can dedicate to it, otherwise it would be much simpler.

For now this is what I got, so I'm guessing for what I got this is as optimal as I can make it.

The other room is my bedroom but the door is open 24/7 so the whole apt is like one big room.

Oh, yes please, I didn't realize I posted it here.

My buddy just texted me some wise words "You've made it as optimal as it can be with what you got at the moment", so I think he may be right.

The temp and humidity I believe I got figured out.

I grow Lions Mane in my basement and the air quality there is horrible.

Could coraling be due to some other factor?  I was running my humidity to high and got a lot of ugly fruits.  But they didn't coral so much as go pink and soggy.

Maybe try a different strain?  I'm using the commercial culture from mycelium emporium so there's possibly a genetic factor in your grow I'm not seeing in mine.

My humidity was over 95%, so that definitely could have been the issue.

Thanks man, I have a controller for it now so hopefully that was the issue.

A circulation fan in the tent may help.

Can you post any pics of the setup or the lions mane that are affected?

lm will definitely act weird in higher co2 but it's not the only variable to consider.

I added a circulation fan inside but since then I haven't had the chance to see them grow because my humidifier failed.

I'll cross my fingers that the circulation was the problem and if not I will add pictures.
