First Innoc. today. Damn! Water is heavy.
    #2847445 - 07/01/04 01:11 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone.  Just wanted to say thanks to anyone who's posted to my questions up to now.  I got around to innoculating today, and now all the jars are in the incubator.
Seriously, though, this was akin to the scene in "Heat" when they're running with those massive bags of cash--I just didn't think how heavy the water in the incubator would be.  AND, I had to carry the bastard down a flight of stairs.  Jesus!  My arms are still feeling it.
Anyway, I guess I'm just posting 'cause I'm all jazzed at getting this first stage done.  One question, however.  I decided to do Magash's rye grain tek (thanks for that one, by the way), only I'm using pint jars as I just don't know if I'd want to deal with several quarts of substrate on my first grow.  With grain, can one place the conlonized grain (assuming, of course, I haven't got contams all over the place) directly onto, say, wire mesh above a perlite layer?  Or is it really best to case the grain?
If I've avoided contaminating too many of my jars, I think my sterilization procedures should be okay for casing.  It's just that I'm suddenly doubting if I trust myself to case all of my jars.  Is this making sense ?
Okay, well, thanks if anyone can help on this question.

I'd case em w/ 50/50 verm/peat tek.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I'm thinking I might try just a straight coco casing...simply because I've seen some enthusiastic posts on this for casing and that it's just one less thing for me to fuck up.
My incubator is running 77.7 just now...I think that's close enough, given mycelium also generates it's own heat.
This is in the basement of my house, though.  I've put six holes in each tub of the tub-in-tub, then duct-taped tyvek over these holes.  There's a little fish tank heater at the bottom.  Water/H202 mix for the fluids.  Towel on the bottom of the inner tub, cushioning my babies.  I'm stoked.  Now we must wait...excellent.  Thanks for the advice!

Good luck.

And remember -- each gallon of water weighs approximately 10 lbs.  (About 9.8 for you sticklers.)

You'd be better off increasing the temp to around 83F

77.7

That is a great temp for fruiting, but, the mycelium needs a warmer temp around 86'f for optimum growth.
Then when you drop the temp to 76-78 and introduce light and fresh air, they will pin like crazy.

But,I have done a complete grow at room temp and it worked just fine for me.It took a little longer, but the results were close to the same.

Thanks. I underestimated the volume of water I have. The poor lil' "Junior" fish tank heater is pumping it, but it just can't dish past 5 gallons. I'll have to make a run and go up one model for the heater.
I'm sure I'll be back with more questions, and thanks for your help!
