OK, I’ve read this piece and its interesting, however, you directed me here for data, proof, that certain growing temps and conditions are better than others.  Specifically, that 70F is superior to 80F when propagating mycelium.

If I understand your advice above, you don’t cover your tubs?  Open air?  How do you control humidity, which all the advice I’ve found suggests that 90-95% is optimal, or even necessary?

Embracing technology is no sin bro.  Temp/Humidity/CO2 sensors and related controllers just make it simpler for all of us who can’t set up shop next to our grows.  It is a great set it and monitor from afar solution.  Those devices maintain parameters tightly.  That may be why all the large commercial mushroom growers use automated regulation of environmental parameters.

I purchased a laminar flow hood from MIdwest, and it worked great.  Fruiting tub and associated also.  Rather than bemoan the aids that can lead to early success you should embrace them if you truly live by your opening statement that you want to spread the availability of this “medicine” to all.

Can you in fact direct me to the research data that you used to conclude that Stamet’s books are naught but paperweights?  I am honestly trying to learn based on facts and data.

And thanks for taking the time to share what you know….

Thank you sir! First time grower and your guide is very much appreciated.

Could you recommend vendors that sell fully prepared grain jars?

I bought fully prepared brf jars from Midwest, and although they came through without contamination and did colonize and fruit, I would not do it again.  When I cut open cakes I found voids in the mycelium which I think indicated poorly mixed rice flour and verm.  Also, they really slowed down and in a few cases would not colonize the bottom of the jar. This could happen if the jars got a lot of vibration in shipping, and got packed down (?), maybe…

Also, they used the tall jars, not the short wide jars, and those tall jars do not colonize as evenly or quickly.

It was my first grow so I was looking to pay for as much help as I could.  It worked but not as well as if I’d made my own jars, and it was here, on Shroomery, that I leaned the folly of the tall jars.

Take the advice of the experienced growers here and make your own BRF jars. There is lots of good advice here, and some demonstrations on YouTube.  Its cheaper too.

As for inoculate, everyone here is going to counsel you to get agar and isolate clean spawn to inoculate with.  Its good advice but also more work.  I source liquid culture from myyco labs, who advertise here.

Many of Shroomery’s experienced members will warn you of the dangers of LC, and those warnings are valid.  My experience with Myyco was positive.  I got what a paid for, on time and without contamination (how do I know that?  I used the same syringe to inoculate 9 cakes PE and another 9 BM, got some surface trich on 2 bm after dunking and rolling, but nothing on the other 16 cakes, and I was able to fruit the two trich cakes by isolating them after cutting off the mold)

So my very new, very limited experience is make your own cakes, but its OK to purchase LC from Myyco to save that step.

Good luck!

Sound like a good one to me.  Just the bit of growing I’ve done made for some noticeably different behavior between varieties of cubensis.
