Honestly this is going to sound douchey and I don't mean for it to be taken as an insult to anyone. I have a very sciencey mind. However, I suppressed my instincts and followed teks very carefully right from the start. I wasn't perfect, but between carefully following instructions, humbly asking for and listening to advice, and a fair amount of beginners luck, I was very successful on my first go at all of this. That is the douchey humble-brag.
Here is the douchey pot stirring. Just because I have an idea that differs from the accepted ideas and want to try it doesn't mean I am "doing science". The principals of science and the scientific method are firmly established for good reason. That is how we advance knowledge. But there are key principals missing from so many noob "experiments".
- limiting variables - It is nigh on impossible to determine cause and effect when there are uncountable differences between experiments.
- repeatability - It isn't proof if you and others cannot repeat the results.
- objectivity - Model experiments to eliminate doubt, not prove a pet theory.
I see many well intentioned people fall to this last one. They have a theory, they have evidence that seems to support it, anecdotal or otherwise, they go to any lengths to defend the theory. Science is not religion. If your theory is fact, you can prove it, it may take a lot of time, though. So don't waste you time arguing. Design and implement experiments and create irrefutable evidence. Share the results. When that is refuted, design and implement more to eliminate the new objections. No matter what you find out, I promise that you will learn something.
The first step to limiting variables and producing repeatable results is following established methods. Once you have that down, change one (1) thing and test the result. Repeat ...
Sorry to lecture, and I don't like to yell into an echo chamber, but this brilliant thread seemed like a good place for this. Okay, back to my own, ah-hmm, experiments.

Hey Sir Beef this link is where I relearned all things PC. BOD's Easy AF how to use your pressure cooker for mycology TEK is a great tek on the subject of PCs. It is a bit over the recommended 5 year mark in age, but I think all of the info holds true today.
