Copying over my post from the quick questions thread...
I've been watching an outdoor bed of psilocybe cyanescens mycelium developing over the past year. First time watching a bed like this.
I noticed two months or so ago the colony took off. A month later, the colony had subsided, and the mulch/woodchip bed was notably decomposed. I ultimately added a bunch of new woodchips, mostly directly on top. The colony seems to be doing alright but it's sitting under a few inches of mostly not-inoculated chips. With fruiting season coming up, I'm wondering if the mycelium may be too deep for fruits to surface. Would that be possible? Or would the mushrooms find a way up?
In the Bay Area if it matters. I'm thinking about removing the top layer after the current heat wave dies down and we start to dip temps at night.
Any recommendations from the experts?
Thanks!

The more you mess with it, the less likely/longer it will take to fruit. You added the chips, buy the ticket take the ride. They will likely pour energy into colonizing the wood over fruiting.
But yeah, woodlovers don't like being fussed with, so leave the chips there.
I did the same thing last year with some azzies in a pot. I still got a few nice fruits, but most of the effort was in colonizing. Whoops!

Yea I was a bit worried about that. I was actually more worried about the physical upwards strength of any fruits to push up through 3-4โ of uncolonized chips. Or if the mycelium would seek upwards before bearing fruit. I guess weโll see in 1-2 months.

Azi that pinned from under a rock and has extra long stem . It got very warm as first pins shot off. Now hope for more fatties and clusters

3-4" is likely too much to fruit through. How far the mycelium is from the surface depends on if there is grass and stuff there to keep the humidity up. My ovoids fruiting in grassy spots, the mycelium can be seen at the surface if you spread the grass out. Some times you get some to pop up in bare mulch and the stem starts an inch under the surface.
I've found adding chips slowly works better than dumping a ton at once. I've expanded one patch a ton from this spring just by tossing in a handful a few times a week. Also risk invaders with too much spawn. I had red stem brown tip stink horns take over an ovoid patch. I think i smothered it with too much spawn and casing layer.

Need some feedback. Last year I had pretty good success bringing a couple tubs inside and fruiting them., these ones have serious side pins. Theyโre still outdoors right now, but Iโm just considering what my next move should be? Iโm thinking taking them out, flipping them upside down, into a larger tub and then put my fogger on them like I did last year? or I may just leave them outside and just keep misting them with a spray bottle? Or just leave them outside and take the tops off? itโs just now starting to cool off at night, but thereโs still no real moisture in the air.
Ps. My girl Sunnydayze will be back in 2 days. Havenโt seen her in 6 months.

Hereโs mine from last year, I sacrificed an old 6hole monotub so they werenโt all smashed side pins. Maybe I could have flooded it and lighted the substrate out, but I think it was worth cutting the tub up. I just let it ride and had this on our table on the back patio, you know, as a conversation piece. Looked like you guys are getting rain up there?

Very nice, what a wonderful find. You didn't take any prints, by any chance?

Just watered my Cyans bed, still too warm and dry this year. There were only 1 or 2 colder nights down to maybe 45 F during the last weeks. Weather forecast says 50-77 F this week, some rain and then down to 40 F by night next week. That sounds like ideal pinning conditions.
Looked closely after watering and what a nice surprise. First pins are already showing

This is great looks man! I've just watered my Azurescens and Cyanescens patches which I created with lots of spawn in March this year, and occasionally watered. There is mycelium breaking to the surface in some parts of the patch, some more heavily than others, but no pins yet.
The temperatures at night are still 6-8 Celsius, and its too dry and not enough rain, but there will be a rain in 4 days followed by a 4 Celsius night temperature, so perhaps my pins will happen in around a week! If so, I'll post an update! I really hope so..
I have used small Beech wood chips for the beds as nutrition for the Azures and Cyans! Here is how the patches look so far:

Thanks cybesa!
Your patches look fully colonized. I also used beech chips. With the drop in temperature you should see pins soon. Waiting for your update.

I was worried about the 60 gallon aerator for my AACT. I figured the bacteria overload from the spillage at the base of the tank was going to hurt the small cyan patch.
Turns out it might have helped a little. These are in an area that had the most AACT applied. The fruits look good.

Yeah I never see ovoid mycelium at the surface, even when they fruiting en masse. If you dig down an inch there will be creamy mycelium everywhere though
