Not my usual but some gourmet mushrooms I been working on. I cloned a lions mane kit my wife bought and made up a few master's mix bags. I got 4lbs 9.9oz of completely clean mushroom. I threw about 2.5lbs of trim that had masters mix mixed in it.

I'm confused. are you saying your master's mix with 1qt spawn put out denser fruit, but less yield than your master's mix bags with just lc?
I've just recently heard of people doing master's mix without spawn and just lc and am curious how it compared to inoculating with spawn.
I personally feel a lot more comfortable with lc than with bag to bag, so i'd prefer to just go lc straight to master's mix or bran supplemented blocks.

Has anyone used fresh/free sawdust from a lumber yard or carpentry company before?
I'm tired of buying HWFP and I'm sure I could get a decent amount of free sawdust from a local company.
My main concern is the wood blend--would want to make sure it's primarily hardwoods--as well as the particle size/shape.
I've tried sawdust from a woodworking company but they had all kinds of wood mixed together and of very variable size. Some was super fine some were more like wood shavings. I abandoned it because HWFPs are so cheap and easy to use but I'm thinking of getting back into some less consistent stuff.
Curious if anyone has experience doing consistent grows with "waste" sawdust.

Seem to be having trouble with shiitake. My blocks (20% soy hull, 80% hardwood pellet) colonise great, popcorn and brown over 8-10 weeks. Then when they fruit they produce kind of fuzzy and spongy brown coloured stems and just generally seem unhealthy, low density icky fruit. The stems are 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick, often with a brown stripe. The caps are dark and leathery but dry, not slimy or anything.
Has anyone come across this? Thanks, appreciate any help

I don't grow shiitake so I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure they don't like soy hulls. There is a particular strain going around that you can run soy hulls but I think for the most part you want to stick with bran at around 15 percent

Thank-you, appreciate the quick response. I’ll try that and read around a bit specifically on the soy hulls but I’ll definitely be ordering some wheat bran! I’ll lay the spent blocks to rest on some beech logs, maybe get lucky with some fruits next year on those. Cheers!

Anyone have any tips for King Oysters? I have a few cleaning up on agar that I would like to grow eventually. Would like to spawn them in shoeboxes if possible

Tried it once. Not worth it IMO.
Downsides of waste sawdust: - It's not dried. You have to figure out appropriate hydration ratio for each batch, since that will change depending on season, source of the wood, how well cured it is etc. - It's messy as hell. Gotta wear a dust mask to use it safely. - It takes up a huge amount of space compared to HWFP
In the end with HWFP I'm paying $0.20 per 5 lb MM fruiting block ($8/40 lb bag) buying in non-bulk prices from a local gardening center, you can probably get even better prices if you're buying in bulk. It's not nothing, but it's more than worth the convenience of being able to weigh it straight out the bag in my kitchen with no need for PPE or cleanup.

For those of you that use wire shelving do you silicone/seal anything on the shelves? Like the areas where the shelf meets the clips etc?
Disregard the reply. Only way to post in this thread. Maybe because it’s been a while since it’s been used.

I don't use wire shelving but galvanized pipes, when they started to rust I coated them in a thick layer of quad (I'm sure is mostly silicone) we'll see what happens.

Haha keep us posted on how well it holds up. I’m sure these will need a spritz of something in the not too distant future.

Hi friends!
I've been on my Lion's Mane journey for a while now with no real success. Namely, I've previously spent 2 months trying to fruit mold because I had no idea what LM mycelium looked like.
Now that I've got a culture that's actually clean and not just 100% mold, I've made some LC and nocced up a test jar. LC has been tested thoroughly (see pics) I've had clean and fully colonized jars, but when spawning them to sterilized sawdust (open air) it ended up in a gross yellow bacterial soup. Probably should've pasteurized the sawdust if I wanted to spawn in open air. I also used ziploc bags which probably isn't the best way to do it either.
So here we are, I've decided to blend some rye grains into fine powder, boil up some hwfp into sawdust and sprinkle it with some of the rye powder. Probably at a about 1:6 rye powder to sawdust. Threw it through the PC at 18psi for 2 hours and vented for 20 minutes.
Here's four pics of the LC testers from various dates:

And the jar I knocked up after 10 days. I squirted about 2ml down the side. I'm planning to just fruit from the jar itself because I want some damn LM fruits and I don't care that they'll be small

Thoughts?

i am assuming its the open air causing the harm. if it's sterilized does that mean you are supplementing it? if so, that would just compound the issue.
if possible, it may be worth using a still air box to put spawn to substrate. better yet to get a flow hood.

Lions mane mycelium looks like lightning bolts on agar. It's very distinctive. I never took pics of my plates but you can Google it to see some examples. I made up 50/50 master mix of hwfp and soy hull pellets. I put 5lbs of the mix into large filter bags and sterilized them for 2.5hrs @ 15-17psi. I used a clone I cleaned up on agar and made a lc from a grow bag my wife got from Etsy. Once the bags cooled, I sprayed the bags with ISO and injected the bags with the LC @ 10ml per bag and sealed the hole with duct tape. This was done in open air. I had 6 bags and injected 3 one day, waited 2 weeks and injected the next 3. I got a minimum 2 flushes from each before contamination hit. These were fruited in open air in my kitchen, and misted multiple times a day. Hopefully this helps you out.

My first time growing kings This is the result of a king cloned from the Asian market. So happy I came across them, kings are hard to find in stores.
I want to print these, I wonder if the big ones are dropping spores by now They almost look like an agaricus of some kind. So weird how they were classified as oysters, I'm guessing microscopically confirmed it.
