Newfoundland, liberty caps (p. Semilanceata) 2023
    #28497268 - 10/09/23 05:14 AM (3 months, 18 days ago)

Hey all haven't seen any post in recent years regarding liberty caps in NL, Canada.

It's been cold enough to frost a couple times but last week the temps was 18-22°C haven't had any luck yet, next week looking at 15 and under so gonna be heading out in the mornings again

is the season right for them?

Or have I just been SOL on my hunts lol

Just made an account to reply to this, I haven't seen any other newfoundlanders on shroomery this year. I've been searching and haven't found anything yet, but there's been barely any mushrooms; let alone semis.

Maybe our season is a bit later where they seem to be acclimated to our colder weather and early frosts? I also have my doubts if where I've been looking even produces at all.

Good luck, though; and I hope we have a bountiful return for our efforts! Feel free to PM to discuss in detail.

Seems that way, usually our temps would have dropped pretty low by now but feels we've been having a warm October lol

Hopefully it's just gonna be a late season for them - next week temps over this way supposed to drop low again so fingers crossed.. always wanted to try liberty caps, but never even met people selling em out this way let alone any clues where to find some so I'm going in blind this year

heard they were a different type of 'shroom trip' compared to cubensis

It's the same thing over here in Europe, UK and Scandinavia too.
They are really unusually late here as well.
September was 1 degree warmer on average, which is pretty much.

Never finding them in the past + the season potentially being late is making this a tough hunt :frown: atleast its assuring to know im not the only one coming up empty atm lol

Guess all I can do is just keep digging til I hit some gold

I'm terrified they'll go almost extinct or much more scarce here if the season keeps getting so unfriendly and late. Climate change is depressing...

Are you in the avalon area of nfld? I'm near St. John's myself.

If it keeps heating up I guess we'll get other Psilocybe species taking over.  :bigjoint:

Western NL! I'm a little more limited on my options of where to search but it's not off the table for me, just more distance to travel to get to some better areas

How are we experiencing summer temperatures in October though goddamn :frown:

I'd say we're probably just gonna have a short season this year but the proper cold temps for the season before snow drops will be short I think so I'm wasting no time this year whenever I got it

I wouldn't be against new species of psilocybes showing up here but the things that'd have to take place for us to see them naturally seem scary :ooo:

Well, it's confirmed that we have P. Caerulipes on the island! Super rare, but it exists. I've heard talk of a couple other potential species, but I don't want to spread conjecture until I see a specimen picked here.

Check out Psilocybe Caerulipes, I'm guessing the ones found in NL were somewhere western. For liberty caps, check out any field with yellow grass, that's what they feed on. I would think some should be out by now, even if it's not fully in swing yet; so start finding places that it could habitate so you know where to go the days after it rains.

In Western NL, you probably have a fairly large amount of grassland within an hour of you some way; pastures and graveyards are the classic advice but you can find them in any field with that yellowing grass. Consider spreading spores yourself once you do find some, too!

Next coming days I'll be going out some areas that have that good pasture type land

being in a city that's all mountains and forests there's a very low possiblity they're even abundant around here when the season is right

but there is a little town nearby that has farmland and horses, I'll take loads of pics of my finds and pick a couple samples of potential liberties

hopefully soon I'll be back with some pics asking for IDs

It was an attempt at a cheer-you-up joke on my part. I don't want any drastic changes either.
But it seems we're in for it nonetheless.

definitely keep looking, climate change is depressing for sure (especially when i talk to older people) but im in maine and found my first lib of the season today, so i’m sure they are up for all you newfies

edit: wait wtf caerulipes is in newfoundland ?? i thought you guys didn’t have beech forest ? i’ve found caerulipes growing from birch bark once … but didn’t think it would occur so far removed from beech. was there ever beech on newfoundland ? like before the last ice age

I'm hitting some fields tomorrow morning

Got some high hopes since we have been getting a ton of rain here and some cooler temps at night and I'm sure they're here even at this moment I just gotta find the right spots

Our libs seem to have evolved to like the frost, so I think this contributes to a later season.

With regards to caerulipes, it was indeed found here; I saw images from forayNL. Dr. Andres Voitk found them here, and I'm assuming those were the ones pictured. I also did a double take with excitement upon discovering this, lol. Time to hit the forests in search of these!

No luck today I hit up a spot that had wide fields and a few farms in the area, guess the cold just aint cold enough yet, the nights are still ~5°c in my area

it stinked of mushrooms and horse poo lol checked alot of sedges and around a nice few piles of poo but came up empty on libery caps :frown:

Did find a ton of winter chanterelles in the woods tho

That's definitely cold enough for normal libs, but the question is if ours are different enough to prefer closer to freezing. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes, and if they do indeed come out when temps drop more. It's been much drier too, which can't help. Winter chanterelles are a good find though!

My side the islands been non stop rain,

Looking out window of work right now there's showers going on w 11°c temps outside and this morning was on and off im gonna be running around some nearby fields in the city again in hopes there's a local spot I can check each year

I really do feel like our liberties are adapted to the cold climate, everything I read up on semilanceata within newfoundland seems to have the heavier harvests of the season happen late October into early November

Still hope yet and aint nothing gonna stop me until the snow starts coming down

Today's hunting locations

No luck though :frown:

Hopefully after the temps start dropping and frost starts up a little stronger we start getting our season

Along with a couple of other fields that were once farms it had animals grazing are now just empty fields that sometimes has horse

I don't see why I wouldn't find any here, only conclusion I can make is it's not it's time yet

Not enough yellow grass would be my guess, that's what they feed on so it's less common to find them in an area absent of that. Most pics of libs I see you can see the yellow grass all around where they're growing, even if it's only just some mixed with healthy grass.

Ended up raining a lot more today so I'm heading out tomorrow morning. Hasn't been much rain lately before this, so could be exactly what's needed to kickstart the season.

i agree that those fields don’t look like where i would expect to find libs. in my experience you want to see this grass ideally, tho it’s not a must it is definitely a good sign

Don't worry these fields were huge, the bright green was only the beginning here

along the sides and in other less kept fields further, it starts getting much more yellow I just snapped these couple at the start of my venture

The spot I'm to looking here is where my father found his " shroomies " back in his day but still nothing came about

The rain has been scattered but lots here on the west this week at least once a day there'd be rainfall over the last week so definitely not to dry for them over this way lol maybe was just too wet yesterday?

I just want to find at least one to get a full understanding of their habitat and growth all this research saying it can grow on decaying grass but is there a particular kind it likes lolo

The other thing to keep in mind is that even if conditions are perfect somewhere, it's still not guaranteed that some liberty cap spores travelled through the wind that way and settled there. This is what makes it a bit more needle in a haystack-y, imo.

How was the town I went to a spot for them once upon a time and is now all dried up? I'm going back today no rain all sun and was near frost last night

There's no way the town as a whole got picked dry right??

I don't know, I sure hope not. It's entirely possible they'll pop up later the season, too. We can play god a bit, and put spores in a water gun, or liquid culture to be even more effective. This can help them get new growth in those places again if they did get picked to death.

I went out today and didn't find a single mushroom, really unsure where to go that's actually got a good shot of producing that isn't just entirely private property. I'm worried this season will pass me by before I find somewhere good.

Don't fret buddy! It's part of the experience

Our research this year will do us good into the next season:grin: and our dedication should pay off

It really does seem like the season is around but extremely scarce until our temperatures start dropping some more for it to really kick start

I was out again today and didn't find a single one either :frown:( maybe tonight or tomorrow I'll step out for a search in different spot but like i said nothings gonna stop me until the snow starts dropping, sure it's disappointing coming home empty handed but its still nice getting out and hopefully someday I'm coming back home with atleast a trips worth, would love to go spreading spores everywhere but I can't even find one bugger for a print

I'm predicting that once we get the next good frost they'll be everywhere

But at least it's giving me more experience in finding mushrooms in general I need to get a good newfoundland book for local species and IDs if you or anyone has any recommendation

Can't help you there buddy, I'm out western

((wish someone out my side would comment into this post, all the bhys are out Avalon hahah))

Seems like our season this year's gonna be a short one between full-tilt growing and snowfall

I've been out just about every chance I gets as well, searching low and far and afaik theyre 'here' but seems like a lot of hunters are having trouble with searching early this year

Seems like you gotta already know some heavy producing areas to get some right now

Found a patch of these guys on my morning walk

I know they aren't p. Semilanceata but am curious as to what they are and would this be a similar habitat/way of growing to where I could potentially find some?

This was just a normal nature walk along a heavily wooded trail so definitely doubt I'd find any that way I was just out for a walk before work

People are finding them on the Avalon, seems to mainly or even exclusively be on grazed farmland though. Nobody is willing to share much info but unfortunately the only real promising spots I can think of require trespassing.

Damn guess I gotta keep going :crazy2:

Oh well, at least today there was much more going on in terms of lookalikes and mushroom life in general since the rains finally cleared away a couple days

i'm thinking I'll have to go about a new town, maybe swing around the previous spot when temps drop a little more

Yeah not libs unfortunately but you're looking in the right type of spot, they're most certainly out but they're still kicking into full gear. Expect the next rainy cold night to produce some flushes for sure.

#5 looks a bit suspect to me, maybe a dung roundhead? could be wrong cause stipe looks good. Great finds, though, you think pollution would be a concern with consuming mushrooms from so close to the highway? Fungi love to concentrate ground toxins into the fruiting bodies.

That does seem to be the hardest part, doesn't it? Finding them is one thing, but knowing where they can even be found is tricky. Wish we had more public farm/pastureland around here, the UK has got it great with regards to that.

Thanks, they all look like libs to me too but there's a couple I'm iffy on. I'll attach a better pic.

I did not get a pic of the land, something to do next time. It was farmland though, mainly cows to my knowledge as they weren't around; but it's all next to a forest with lots of mossy forest floor type covering where libs don't grow, with the patches of grass next to that containing libs; so they don't need huge amounts of grass to grow I don't think. There were bigger, open fields, but I found more near the forest on the edges where the grass was more sparse.

Lots of garbage everywhere, which was sad to see; how can people take mushrooms and still disrespect the sacred land that gives them those mushrooms?

seeing those new pics I am suspicious of the pair with flatter caps. do the stems feel any different? those two look like panaeolus

that’s interesting to hear about the habitat, i’m hoping to find more spots with shorter grass and i’ve heard that libs like that springy kinda moss

Yep pretty sure those are dung roundheads as someone pointed out, but also harmless. Pretty sure the rest are good, maybe not enough for a trip yet, though.

Short grass is so much better, I could never have found these in the thick, matted tall grass that can be so common around here. I also feel like I didn't get that many considering I could actually see with the short-medium grass, and it took me 5 hours to find all of these.

I don't feel like I missed many, either; but who knows. Hoping to find a spot that produces a bit thicker flushes.

And here's my picks, the left is the rejects I think I did okay

But the gills is from the most pointed one, am I right in saying semilanceata

Edit: second one from the right is a goner, stem is looking off I think?? I'm new to this so not beat at IDs

Yep, you got libs all right! Your weather out there is usually a bit warmer so it's not surprising it took a bit longer for them to pop up out your way.

The 2nd on the right side does look a little off to me too, but I can't say for sure from that picture. The others on the right are libs, though!

awesome to see you all out picking now, hopefully no one is bothered by me sharing some of my pictures here. there's not an official eastern north america thread this year and i enjoy checking this one

i found a fair bit yesterday, not as lucky at the spots i looked today which turned up none, wondering if hayfields are a no go entirely. im quite eager to get a better understanding of the habitat requirements!

No worries at all man the more the merrier imo,

Great to see we're all successfully picking some now

Went to the same spot twice yesterday first run wasnt a whole lot, second run I found a couple decent patches:

Even with the few that I'm finding here tho, it still feels like this season is weird for it.. everywhere has been experiencing a late and scarse one this year

Haven't had any luck finding recently out west,

we've had a couple snowfalls now and there wasn't a liberty in sight last few times I've been out there's one spot I goes to first that's a nice little area of fruits, sadly after the snow it hasn't been coming back with any fresh one :frown:

Might go again soon weather and time depending but it looks like everything's getting down to extreme cold and all the plant life and mushrooms are starting to disappear til the next season

Atleast I found a good handful this year, and knows exactly what to be looking for next fall :smirk:

That's brutal, I can't imagine it only lasted a couple weeks! I've seen posts on here of people claiming to find them in December/early January under the snow, so hopefully we get a few more flushes yet! Very worrisome that it seems to have dried up where you are, though.

They're still out! Not as many as before, but that's likely due to other hunters.
