Parasol (Macrolepiota procera) Cultivation * 2
    #28493159 - 10/05/23 02:21 PM (3 months, 22 days ago)

Hi everyone,

I want to cultivate the parasol mushroom either outdoors or indoors or both.
A friend is making a spore print since he just found some.

I wanted to ask did any of you try to cultivate the parasol and how did you approach the cultivation.

If i start from spores what medium should i use? Is MEA good?

Second step i was planning to use the agar culture to make some sawdust spawn.
And then go with that to a patch outdoors, cover with woodchips and mulch.

Been reading mycelium running from Stamets (I'm hesitant to mention this, since I've been seeing many negative posts about him on shroomery).

He goes this route. Sawdust spawn and an outdoor patch fed with woodchips and mulch.

Any ideas on what would be an approach to indoor cultivation of the parasol? Is it even possible?

Any recommendations on reading material?

Many kind regards to all of you,
V.

I tried it, but without succes. Cloning the mushroom itself was easy on LME agar, and colonization of wbs and a huge amount of liquid culture was also fine. Its the application to the field that failed. I sprayed the LC on a drizzly day on an unfertilezed pasture, and also made some small holes in an area which i filled with the WBS and covered up. I did it very early spring when it was still humid.

Two years later still no fruits. I remember also running in to a lack of online information about this mushroom.

Maybe spraying a spore solution does something, but youll need a lot of spores.
I'm also not sure how picky it is for nutrients in the soil and if it forms some kind of relationship with the soil fauna.

I'm quite sure woodchips wont do the trick, as they are not woodloving but grassfield lovers.

Let me know how it goes I'd love to make it work!

Hi thank you for replying.
I also didn't find much info on it. Searched shroomery and found a post from Mycelio, who is a trusted cultivator.

The post is 2012 and mentions a research paper from sweden having success growing outdoors.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15777886#15777886

Other than this, nothing, I wrote to Mycelio to ask if he had succeess but no reply currently.

Keep in touch if you ever succeed. I'll come back to this post if I find any info or manage to grow it, but that won't be till next autumn.

Good luck.

I actually was of the opinon, that cultivation of parasol mushrooms in the garden is an established technique. There are cultures that you can buy from renown mushroom cultivation shops, at least in the german language area in middle europe.
You might want to apply google translate to the following links
https://www.pilzmaennchen.de/pilzbeete/parasol-gartenkultur
https://www.pilzzucht.at/pilzbrut/7/parasol-koernerbrut

Indoor cultivation from sterile cultures also was reported to be successfull, but in very few instances. I am currently trying to do this myself, but  inocculated the substrate just yesterday. So this might take at least 2-3 month until I can report something on this matter.

Thanks for replying and leaving the links. Stop by again if you're successful. Would like to hear very much the details of your grow.

I am very impressed with the scientists but I threw some shaggy stem butts in my back yard beneath mature Cypress trees. They grew and fruited for about 5 years.

Any update on the progress of your tests with indoor cultivation?

All good, Stamets recommends using stem butts for inoculations and expanding the myc. Doesn't go into the details in this book though.
But i can see how if the conditions of your patch were good and there was enough nutrition for the myc, scattering stem butts would be enough, no need to overthink the outdoor cultuvation.
I would really like to be able to produce my own sawdust spawn here and then use it as you did your stem butts. That is my goal.

Nothing yet, things move very slowly where I'm from
Friend of mine made a print.
I have yet to collect it.
This is the current status.

Will keep posting here in the thread in case of any developments, successes or failures.
Check back maybe in the Spring. There should be at least some news by then.

I think the first cultivation attempt is looking good so far, groweing 2-3mm a day. Migh be faster at a higher temperature. Currently 22°C = 71.6°F

If you are successful, a newspaper would be a wonderful thing, I dream of having them on my land. After that

That looks wonderful, come back to post any developments you might have.

Can you provide some info on your substrate and inoculation?
Did you go from a spore syringe or print to agar or directly to this substrate? Or did you use the körnerbrut you mentioned in your previous post?
Is this a sterilized substrate?
What are you using for the substrate?
How big is the container?
Is the method something you are developing or are you going by some literature?

Thank you for sharing in this thread.

Cloned it from a fruitbody on ME YE Peptone Agar.
inoculated sterilized (70 mins a 118°C) substrate (3L bucket) directly via transfer from agar.
No grainspawn (= Körnerbrut in german) was used, since I want to know how well it is able to degrade the lignocellulose of the substrate, without adding too much starch via grainspawn. Also, using grainspawn would not have provided much time saving in this approach, because I would have had to wait for the grain to colonize. I also do not know how fast M. procera is in colonizing grain.
Main Substrate is flax pellets (500g), but there is some starch due to the wheat bran (10g/L --> 30g total), which I added to provide some magnesia and other trace elements since there is no earth or clay mixed to the substrate.

18 days later:

Mycelium seems to strongly decolorize the substrate.
The surface mycelium has a little bit of a beige/brownish tone.
Also likes growing over the plastic and i was afraid it might grow out of the bucket.
The "veiny" structures are looking interesting, but the pictures from other attempts growing this species look similar.
