3rd time's the charm? Somehow I doubt it.
    #2849015 - 07/01/04 11:54 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

1st failure: the PF substrate was way too wet and gummy. Mycelium couldn't penetrate it. Only one jar grew a bit of fungus then stopped. (see picture)

2nd failure: I was in a rush and decided to use white rice as a substrate. I just grew myself some yeast and rotten rice.

3rd try: I prepared more PF substrate. I followed the PF Tek for Simple Minds, being restrained with the water and using 1 part rice flour to 7 parts vermiculite. Having no more spore solution, I cut away the mycelium that grew during my first failed grow (see picture), put it in a blender with some water, and blended it.

I innoculated with this verm-colored shroom-scented water. 4 days later, and no sign of any action. The metallic copper colored dribbles are still in my jars -- no sign of any change in or around them.

Have I most likely messed up again? How? If my jars are too dry, is there anything I can do about this, or am I SOL at this point?

Get rid of that mix and keep it simple. 2 parts verm, 1 part water, 1 part brf. The mix that I'm reading that your using is never going to work.

I used the mix you described. It was gooey and impermeable.

You may want to do it right. Way to many people have used that mix, it comes from the guy who invented the tek and I know it works for a fact. So like I said, try doing it right or keep getting the wonderful results your getting now.

This is not what the PF tek for Simple calls for though, you used far too little brown rice flour.....

...Are your jars getting any air exchange?

Anno: perhaps on his third try he is trying to (under)compensate for the water excesses by using a higher percentage of vermiculite.

If you are using the PFTek water:verm:brf ratio then it shouldnt be anywhere near that soggy...perhaps you are picking up some water in some other areas of your procedure?

the last time your lack of brf and subsequently nutrients probably fucked the growth. . . go back to the drawing board and try not to mess with tried methods.

Depends on the vermiculite used. I never was able to use the PF formula because it always came out too wet, that's why I wrote my version of the tek to make the guessing of the water content an end.

ah yes not all verms are created equal, ive only seen one kind of verm in my area so i have a tendency to forget. Like he said, eyeball it . . . you want your verm moist but not dripping when you give it a squeeze.

Don't squeeze vermiculite, you are destroying its structure....
Read how I do it:
