snowboarding tips * 1
    #28485311 - 09/27/23 09:59 PM (8 months, 27 days ago)

I want to start snowboarding

I am like 6foot 5 and about 210 lbs
What kind of gear will fit me? Long arms.....

Also, what's a good beginner board? What do I look for? Is this something I can buy online or do I need to go to a shop and talk to stoner riders?

Ur gonna want the biggest board they make like 160cm or whatever. Ur gonna want probably an all moutain board. I wouldn't go for anything with a camber or weird powder stuff to it starting out. Remember u can rent stuff and take lessons starting out :sadyes:

Board length should be when the board slides just under your chin, or at least thats the size I always ride.

Either buy cheap used equipment or rent first before spending big money, most people who try to learn to snowboard quit... especially if you're learning as an adult.

Lessons are usually useless, just watch a couple YouTube videos on the basics then go fall down the mountain for a week or two and eventually you'll get the hang of it

I'm pretty sure I'll like it

I've skateboarded since I was a teen. I know it's different, but I get the "vibe of extreme sports"

I live at the bottom of a mountain, about 20/30 min car drive so location won't be a hindering factor either.

Is there a major difference between name brand boards like Burton and cheaper ones?

Id recommend renting a board and boots from a ski resort. And get beginner lessons. Snowboarding can be a confusing sport to start out with, especially if have never skateboarded or surfed before.

And try to go on a nice day. Snowboarding is quite difficult in a snow/wind storm :sadyes:

Stay low center of gravity and really focus on how your leading edge is connected to the snow. Looking ahead where you want to go is another tip. Seems you end up there if you look there. Careful not to catch your edge wrong. It will take you down. It happens though. Get ready to be sore.

Yeah there are lots of differences. Some are gimmicks, some really matter

I've been riding the same never summer rocker camber board for like 12 years now. I'd like to try some of the newer tech out but the whole sport is just way too expensive for me these days. It's like $120 for a lift ticket in my area now and the mountains are all packed with huge lift lines

I'm startin' to froth... homies got a trip lined up for a home rental in Park City, UT for a week in Feb, stoked to say the least!

From Mt. Baldy last year, an hour from my door in Los Angeles!  Not usually this good, but hot damn last year was fuckin' fire!

As for snowboarding tips, peeps already laid it out for ya more or less.  Probably best to take a lesson to start, rent equipment... if you ain't feelin' it, swap out and try a few different sticks to see what feels right for you.  Everyone's different and will have their own preference, so it's kind of silly to think there's one "best" board out there or whatever.  You just gots to get out there and feel it out, then make your decision.

Skis are great too.  I started on skis as a wee one.  Got on a board for the bulk of my teenage years, took a decade off, and now I'm back on skis again.  My closest snow freak compadre still rocks the board, and while he's pretty much game to take anything on, he has a bit more struggle on moguled out runs or tight tree lines than I do, as you can't really hop/bounce turns as quickly on a board as you can on skis.  Granted, if you're good enough, it won't really matter... but I'm just sayin', if you aren't feelin' one, consider trying the other, cause the mountain is a fucking riot!

:yesnod:

I'd love to spend some time learning to ski. I do a bit of cross country but I still haven't tried downhill skiing

With snowboarding I mostly do glades, I love being in the trees and route finding. Definitely can't cut through them as quickly as on skis though. I've learned my lesson trying to bomb through trees, one root or hidden stump on a board can mean a faceful of oak

Dug up a few vids from when I was like 17 and got a helmet cam for a trip to the alps. Got to ride down the side of a glacier that I later learned was filled with crevasses and was a huge avalanche risk, I was wondering why I had all the powder to myself and no one had gone out that way

https://streamable.com/t9c67n someone had warned me that there was a blowdown on this trail that would impale someone if they were coming down too fast, I found it at the end of the vid. Luckily I knew about it and was being cautious... that thing was a death trap

Oh God, I snowboarded once.
I remember this one moment I had where I was goin' down the easiest bunny slope hill closest to the main entrance.
There was this girl on the ground and I was heading straight for her.
I didn't know how to turn and avoid her.
I tell her get out of the way and I zoom past her as she barely gets out the way

Don't you have to like lift up your toes to turn?

You have to use one edge or the other either toe or heel. if your in that situation and don't know what to do it's best to try to stop which uses your heel edge leaning your wieght up hill and if all else fails just fall. It's your responsibility  to avoid hitting people although folks shouldn't be just sitting in the middle of the trail either but on bunny hills and stuff it's just people just starting out so you have to go slow and watch out for people who have no idea what they're doing and lil kids and stuff. No matter what you should always be skiing/riding in control :sadyes:
