Ambition
    #2847569 - 07/01/04 01:53 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Why is ambition seen as such a positive trait in our society? And why is lack of ambition looked down upon in pity or digust?

Is there positive application of ambition outside the shut-up, go-to-work, and do-as-you're-told system?

[radiohead]Ambition makes you look pretty ugly. Kicking screaming Gucci lttle piggy.[/radiohead]

Internal conflict. Within each of us there is a kind of existential angst that no material thing can cure. I sometimes think that this is the state of the psyche when it is without love. True love that is - giving and recieving. Other times I think that it's simply part of the human condition. Without it, what would motivate us? We are forever striving for the unspeakable.

Quote:

"It's actually hard to explain. Let's take an example -- imagine
you fell into a water barrel and are drowning."
"OK."
"Then imagine that for a second your head came above the water, you saw
the light, gulped in some air and something touched your hands. And you
grabbed it and held on to it. Now if your whole life is like drowning -- and
it is -- then love is what helps you to keep your head above the water."
"You mean the love of the right things?"
"What you love is not really important. Of course, one can love the
right things even under water. Whatever it is you love and hold on to, it
must hold you. The worst is when you love someone else -- you see, he can
always withdraw his hand. To make a long story short, love is what puts
everyone where he is. Except maybe the dead. Well, actually..."
"I think I never loved anything," interrupted Sixfinger.
"Oh yes, you've been there too. Remember how you cried all day thinking
about the guy who waved you back when they threw us over the wall? That was
love. You don't know why he did it, do you? Maybe he thought he was mocking
you in a much subtler fashion than others. And I personally think he was. So
your crying for him was pretty foolish, but absolutely right. Love gives
meaning to what we do, although it isn't really there. "
"So is love cheating us? Is it something like a dream?"
"No, love is something like love, while a dream is a dream. All the
things you do, you do them because of love. Otherwise you'd just sit on the
ground and howl in horror. Or in disgust."

Anyway, Nirvana exists within us all as an ideal, and that's what keeps us going. It is our mission to shape reality into our own conception of this as of yet unattainable vision of perfection. Maybe it will always be slightly out of reach...

I think ambition indicates passion.  And passion is sexy

Well...the right kind of ambition can help you realize your dreams. Without a certain amount of ambition that can prove difficult. For example if your dream is to sit in a coach and smoke pot, you might have to work your ass off for a few years to be able to afford that luxurie.

i dunno....

Well I think you can be passionate about something without being ambitious. You can feel very strongly for something and work to get it without trying too hard. A lot of people are ambitious for their office job. Does that mean they have a passion for sitting in a cubicle all day doing paper work? Sounds like a boring passion to me. Hehe don't get agitated I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

But my point was more to the effect of this: Suppose two people with identical background and qualifications are interviewing for a job. The person with more ambition is always picked because it appears he'll do a better job. Even though after hiring, both interviewees would've done the same amount of work anyway.

And Shroomnoob: Do you think a person can still follow their dreams without ambition? If they follow their passion for something won't they get there eventually? What's the rush?

Maybe ambition indicates drive to succeed.  Most folks want success (or to be as close to it as possible).  For many people, I think success is their meaning of life.  So...ambition must mean that fella is on the road to enlightenment!

"I think ambition indicates passion" by: viaggio

Passion is a trait associated with life. A lack of ambition is listlessness which is a trait associated with resignation or death. You must have ambition to do something (you don't have to want to be president)...how about be a good gardener or something of the like. If not just go on and get your coffin and lie down.

I wouldn't go as far to say that a lack of ambition is associated with death.  I don't have much ambition, and I'm still alive and kicking

Dictionary.com (someone had to do it)...
An eager or strong desire to achieve something, such as fame or power.

Maybe because most people value things such as fame and power, someone with ambition might indicate they're more likely to achieve than those without ambition.  I think this is the answer to your question, Max.

Ambition does not have to be large.
