Does Coprinellus disseminatus contain coprine?
    #28443977 - 08/23/23 02:41 PM (5 months, 2 days ago)

Feel free to move this if it's in the wrong place; I see that this part of the forum is mostly dedicated to cultivation, but it also said to science, so...

The reason I ask is that this species is typically listed as edible and non-poisonous, and although it's insubstantial, and possibly doesn't taste great (haven't tried it), it does tend to appear in large numbers and could potentially be an interesting species to collect for culinary experiments.

However, I know certain coprinoid species (like Coprinopsis atramentaria) contain the toxin coprine, which inhibits an enzyme involved in the metabolism of alcohol, and that it's thus generally recommended to avoid it, even though it's unlikely to pose a problem if you don't drink alcohol for a while before and after. I read on Wikipedia that Coprinellus micaceus has been found not to contain coprine, and I've also read that the more choice edible Coprinus comatus does not contain it either, so clearly some coprinoids contain coprine and others don't.

Thus the question: does C. disseminatus contain coprine? I couldn't find any good answer to this anywhere, maybe someone here knows anything about it.

Coprinellus disseminatus does not have coprine.    In coprinoids just in a couple sections of Coprinopsis.
