Endospores--everywhere?
    #2843626 - 06/30/04 01:09 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Hi everyone. I know that with grain teks it's better to soak the grain 24 hours, boil, then PC so that the endospores have made themselves vulnerable by germinating in the water.
But, how widespread are these endospores? Why don't we worry about them everywhere, on everything we use (gloveboxes, terrariums, casing containers, etc.)?

Thanks for any information!

GB

Well, basically, they -are- pretty close to everywhere, but so long as they aren't airborn, they aren't going to be getting into your substrates.  Your glovebox doesn't really provide a place for one or two random endospores to grow -- your nice incubated jar full of WBS does.

Endospores are in fairly high numbers in most grain---relative to many other sources, anyway. Straw also tends to have a LOT of endospores, but the bacteria won't bloom on it as quickly as it will on sterilized grain.
Bacillus forms endospores in response to [among other things] drying out. The farming of grain/straw provides a nice slow drying time, great conditions for making endospores. So while they are rarely incidental indoor contaminants [stray single Bacillus colony on an agar plate], the endospores causing problems are most often from the source materials.
On the other side of the coin, endospores may be VERY prevalent in a given indoor environment, but we don't see it often because they aren't designed for airborne travel as much as a mold spore.
