II. Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom
============================================================================================================================================

I bet you could get a more accurate ID if you followed the above form.

I could tell you what they basically are right off the bat but will instead do so after the guidelines have been adhered to- no offense at all- just procedure.

To get a better spore print try doing one overnight. It also helps if you place a bowl upside down over the specimen to help keep the humidity up.

Your specimens look to be Conocybes. Unfortunately, Conocybes cannot be identified accurately to species without a microscope.

Happy mushrooming!

Just out of curiousity, once you have a microscope does it take a very careful eye to accurately idenitify the concocybe? or are there some key characterisitics to look for?

With any mushrooms there are key characteristics used to identify them, with or without a microscope. Some of the characteristics under the microscope require a fairly good eye and patience.

Incidentally, the statement that a microscope is required is not original with me. Dr Orson Miller has told me that at least a couple times I can think of. He is very emphatic that no Conocybes can be identified accurately without a microscope.

Happy mushrooming!
